If it can't be Lincoln (which seems to have been fading) I can accept Argo winning, but I'm afraid Director will go to Russell since they really liked Silver Linings Playbook and De Niro will get Supporting Actor as a Thanks For Finally Not Sucking award. I wish Lee Jones would get it despite being a grumpy old man at awards shows. ZDT looks pretty dead, it might not even win a single award. But it'll be interesting to see if the love for Amour helps it get Screenplay or even a bigger upset like Riva or Haneke in addition to Foreign Film.

Whoops--but given that wig he's wearing in the film, you can surely understand my confusion...

Ed Schultz had David Edelstein of the NYT on last night to discuss Oscar picks. Edelstein said the BP love for Lincoln had waned and he thought Argo would take the big prize over ZDT. He said DDL was a lock for Best Actor, JLaw would win Best Actress over Jessica Chastain because of the controversy over ZDT, and Spielberg would take Best Director because Bill Clinton had been campaigning for him. Also, he joked that he couldn't even remember who else was nominated for Best Supporting Actress besides Hathaway, and while Tommy Lee Jones should win for Best Supporting Actor, DeNiro would take the prize because he'd been out there campaigning for it, while Jones "is thought of as kind of a sourpuss" who doesn't believe in all that. Ed expressed amazement at this, to which David replied, "Hey, Ed--you should know politics when you see it. It's all politics." Edited to correct the gender of Jones' and DeNiro's category--And this is exactly why who actually wins the awards became a yawn-fest for me years ago, once I realised it has very little to do with who gave the best performance and everything to do with Hollywood politics. Don't get me wrong, I'll still be watching - for the gowns, the show and to see who gives the best/worst speeches.

The Independent Spirit Awards liked one movie more than most of the others. (The show isn't being broadcast until tonight in IFC [stupid cable doesn't show it] so beware of spoilers!) And hurrah! for !!! {One of the winners}Matthew McConaugheyhey for Magic Mike edited for the spoiler that I just learned how to do!

Well, that explains why my local indie theater had "Best Supporting Actor 2013" next to his name in the lobby (they're showing a bunch of his movies this weekend.) I must not have seen that it was for the Independent Spirit Awards. I was all confused like, "But he wasn't even nominated for an Oscar!" And I agree, hurrah for him!

Blind Gossip has an item, based on an article in "The Hollywood Reporter," about an anonymous director's Oscar pics. The article discusses the director's thought process about his selections. Overall, it seems well-reasoned. There doesn't seem to be much consensus about who the director is. Nonetheless, it's an interesting peek into one Academy voter's mind, if the article is true.

LadyJane-- I'm with you. I watch the show for clothes, red carpet gaffes/ awful, self-congratulatory speeches. Oscar Sunday is one of they only times I allow myself to drink a lot!
There are about six or so big-time consultants that the studios employ to plan and execute their Oscar strategies. Almost all of them have connections to the 1990's Miramax & Dreamworks teams. Anyway, if their clients win their category, they get bonuses, which could net them anywhere from a high six figure to low seven figure. With so much money on the line, they'll do or say anything to win. It reminds me of the corrupt figure staking judges. I also know several Academy members. None of the people I know watch all the nominated films. They complain that they dont' have time, (despite getting all of the screeners in December). They matter of factly state that they either vote based on what their friends tell them,or how they feel about a person (their politics/personality etc...). Seeing those shenanigans up close changed everything for me, and eventually, my love for awards season waned. I still watch, but on a delay, so I can snark.
BoxofRocks-- As for the anonymous director, I immediately thought of Brett Ratner. But I read his quotes in the Daily Fail and although the quotes didn't change, the presentation of them did, and his name immediately popped into my head.

Although I didn't expect it to be completely politics-free ("I'm voting for X person because I like him/her even though I haven't seen that movie"), it had less than I anticipated.

Ugh, I hate those gift bags. Why do millionaires need to be given freebies to come to the Oscars? Would they decline to present if there were no gift bags? Please, these people are in the business of self-promotion. Sorry, with so many people just getting by, it just bugs that these celebrities who already have more than they know what to do with, get even more.
