Chiwetel Ejiofor's performance in Twelve Years a Slave is getting absolute raves at the Telluride Film Festival, as is the movie itself. Look for the hype to ramp up at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival and of course, at the Oscars.

I think three of the Best Actor slots might actually already be "locked": at this point I'm guessing Chiwetel Ejifor, Forest Withaker and, if things go right for him, Matthew McConaughey. I know there's going to be a collective meltdown among the Cumberbitches but Cummerbund Bandersnatch might get in there based on the fact that he's going to be in three awards contenders (plus The Hobbit) and if the Wikileaks movie isn't going to be ignored, that one might be his chance in.
Speaking of The Fifth Estate, I would love to see Daniel Brühl, one of my favourite German actors, to somehow sneak his way into awards season. It's probably not going to happen but it would be all kinds of awesome if it did. He's also going to be in Ron Howard's Rush.

I think Michael B. Jordan in Fruitvale Station is pretty secure for an best actor nomination.
It looks like Sandra Bullock is about to get nominated again for Gravity. She is supposedly amazing in the movie.

Cae Blanchett could get into Best Actress as well for Blue Jasmine. Woody Allen movies tend to do quite well in terms of nominations and she got excellent reviews.

I'm seeing a bunch of possible Oscar contenders at TIFF starting this week - Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, Prisoners, Philomena. Very excited! Gravity, Philomena & Prisoners have already played Telluride and/or Venice and are getting raves.
ETA: Idris Elba is also a lead actor possibility for Mandela. I have a hard time believing the Academy is progessive enough to nominate Idris, Forrrest, Michael & Chiwetel so I think at least 1 if not 2 of them will miss out. Fruitvale has already opened do by virtue of being early it may get overlooked in the glut of movies that are to come.

And, he just gets better looking as he ages.

I'm also seeing Under the Skin which is probably not an Oscar possibility although Scarlett Johansson has been getting rave reviews. The other ones I really wanted to see- Devils Knot, 12 Years a Slave, The Disappearance of Elanor Rigby were either sold out too or at inopportune times.
