I get the passes which enables me to buy tickets online before they go on sale to the general public. The only movies I wanted to see that were sold out were Devil's Knot and August Osage County. I will report back with reviews once TIFF is over!

Chiwetel Ejiofor's performance in Twelve Years a Slave is getting absolute raves at the Telluride Film Festival, as is the movie itself. Look for the hype to ramp up at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival and of course, at the Oscars. It makes me so, so happy that he is finally getting his due. It feels like he's been on the cusp forever.

So far I've seen Gravity, Prisoners, Philomena, The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby & Dallas Buyers Club. I think there are definitely some award winning performances in the bunch.
I saw Gravity in 3D and I usually hate 3D but I think it's the rare movie that it does work for. George provides some comic relief but its really Sandra's movie and she's captivating. Very tense movie. Gorgeous cinematography.
Matthew M & Jared Leto are pretty much guaranteed Oscar noms for Dallas Buyers I think. Garner isn't given much to do but the guys really shine. God Matthew is almost painful to look at.
Philomena is surprisingly funny and touching as well as horrifying. Judi is as always great. I hear The Dissapearance of Eleanor Rigby has been picked up for release next year and I certainly think Chastain could contend. She & James have phenomenal chemistry.
I really enjoyed Prisoners. Hugh's is probably the showier performance but I think Jake nicely balances him out. I think the male acting categories will be competitive next year but both could sneak in. I thought Jake was deserving for End of Watch so maybe as a make-up nod he'll fare better sneaking into supporting.

I'm going to see Prisoners on Friday! Can't wait. August: Osage County has been getting mixed reviews. Definitely not the slam dunk it was supposed to be. There has been some controversy over the ending. Here is an article detailing the differences between the play and the movie (spoilers obviously). I really liked the other movie adaptations of Tracy Letts' plays- Bug and Killer Joe. But both were extremely dark. I'm not familiar with August: Osage County the play but given his other works I can't imagine it being particularly life affirming.

12 Years a Slave won the TIFF People's Choice Award. Prisoners & Philomena were runners-up.
I've heard mixed things about August also. Apparently the Director is talking about changing the ending. It seems a tough movie for people to "like".

When I was in line for Under the Skin today they announced 12 Years A Slave had won the people's choice award and were having a free screening after Under The Skin. I was so tempted to bail on that and see 12 Years A Slave instead but it would've meant waiting for another 2 hours in line. I probably should've waited. Under the Skin was okay. Beautiful scenery but really strange. Most of the people there hated it. There were quite a few walkout. I really want to see 12 Years A Slave.
I thought Prisoners was good. A tad too long. The acting was excellent although I think most of the cast was wasted. It was mostly the Hugh Jackman show with a side of Jake Gyllenhaal. Which is fine, Jackman was great. But why hire Viola Davis and Maria Bello only to give them a couple of scenes? I even wanted to see more Terence Howard who I normally dislike! I'd be surprised if Jake Gyllenhaal got an Oscar nod. He was fine although he did this weird blinking thing throughout. It was kind of distracting, I kept waiting for a scene that showed him doing coke. But he was much better in Zodiac playing a similar character. Also the whole mystery part of it kind of felt like a Law and Order episode. I figured it out pretty quickly and I am usually terrible at those things. But I did like the ending. I could see it getting some nominations just because they don't make a lot of these types of films anymore. Contemporary intelligent thrillers that at least attempt to tackle some moral issues.

I hadn't even heard of Prisoners until they started advertising on TV a few weeks ago. It looks really good, and that is a fantastic cast.
Saw Blue Jasmine and while the film had an odd tone and was strangely edited (those weird extra beats in shots), Cate Blanchett will definitely deserve that Best Actress nomination. I do hope Sally Hawkins gets some notice too. She was really good sparring with Blanchett.

Nicole Kidman's Grace Kelly movie has been dumped to next year by Weinstein thus putting her out of oscar contention. Based on the scathing reviews, we can also rule out Naomi Watts for Diana. Now I'm reading that Paramount wants Wolf of Wall St cut down and may bump it up next year. Never a vote of confidence. So that would rule out Leo as well. Suddenly some of the categories may be opening up.

So far, I think we've got the following as solid leads:
Picture: 12 Years a Slave Director: Steve McQueen Actor: Chiwetel Ejiofor Actress: Cate Blanchett, with Sandra Bullock running close behind. Her recent win gives her a disadvantage though.
