I agree, Best Picture is 12YaS to lose at this point. I don't even know what other film stands a chance. Last year, there were so many big movies from big directors with Argo, Les Mis, Life of Pie,Django, Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln, Silver Linings etc. that it was hard to predict in the beginning which film was going to win. But I think 12 Years a Slave is going to sweep this awards season.

I'm seeing it this weekend and am looking forward to it. From a cynical viewpoint, it checks all the Oscar boxes. White, liberal Hollywood will fall all over themselves to vote for this. It's this year's Schindler's List.

Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep are likely Best Actress candidates again, and this amusing interview explains their fierce rivalry. Inside is the clip from the Oscars, and I didn't notice before that Sandra "disses" Meryl on the way to the podium. These two ladies will always be full of awesomesauce.

I just saw August: Osage County. I can definitely see Meryl getting nominated. She stole every scene she was in.... Julia was very capable, but lord she looks plain/drained. Yikes! To me, it seemed like she was playing herself-- but that's my bias. I really loved Chris Cooper and Margot Martindale.
Also, the dinner scene is memorable!
If they do place Meryl in the Supporting Actress category, she'll definitely have more screen time than all her competitors.... Benedict is in 3 short scenes. Chris is in maybe 6 scenes and Margot is in a dozen tops. The film is almost all Julia and Meryl, with Julianne and Juliette getting nice screen time too.
Bummed Meryl, Ewan and Benedict weren't there. (Neither was Julia). Has Meryl come to anything for this film? I don't think she has. Makes me wonder if the rumors of strife between TWC/Julia are true.

I just saw Dallas Buyers Club. Jared Leto should start clearing his calender. He was truly extraordinary as Rayon. Better than Fassy by far. Matthew was very good too. I haven't seen Nebraska yet, but I have seen 12YAS, AIL, and DBC. Chiwetel would be my favorite. Robert has age and likability on his side. He carries his film admirably without saying a word. (OK, he says one word). Matthew would be my 3rd choice.
Looking forward to seeing the other films. It's a good group this year.
Also, I would LOVE for Julie and Ethan to win best screenplay.
I thought The Weinstein Company was independent. I guess not. (Learn something new every day).

With McConaughey, Bullock, Hanks and Roberts all likely to get nominated this year, I've got to agree with someone over at AwardsWatch: feels like it's the 90s again when these actors were at the height of their popularity. Not that they've done shabby since then but, you know what I mean. ;-)
Even at they Best Spirit Awards the Best Actor category is already crowded. Will be interested to see how that one goes this year.

Martini Girl are you referring to the Spirit Awards when you are talking about Weinstein not being independent? My understanding of the eligibility criteria for the awards is that the budget is has to be under $20 million so the studio involved in releasing the picture is really irrelevant.
I'm thinking Michael Jordan for Fruitvale will definitely get squeezed out of lead actor. I think the only lead female actress who will get nominated is Cate Blanchett.
