Vanity Fair looks back 20 years at the 1995 Oscar Broadcast, which was the epic battle of 5 legitimately great movies: Forrest Gump vs. Pulp Fiction vs. Quiz Show vs. Four Weddings and a Funeral vs. The Shawshank Redemption. With lots and lots of pictures. We were so young back then. Ha, that's great. My whole life Robert DeNiro has seemed like a crotchety old man, but now that I'm 20 years older I'm looking at those pictures of him from 20 years ago and thinking he looks hot and not that old. I remember Best Picture in 1994 was a contest between Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump. Everybody knew Forrest Gump was going to win, but it was thought to be a bit of a travesty that the mainstream, shmaltzy, feel-good movie was going to win over the bold, revolutionary piece of cinema. And it's probably true, but I do enjoy Forrest Gump. Four Weddings was seen as a popular comedy that didn't really belong at the Oscars, Shawshank was a bit tainted by Hollywood's dislike of Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon (who pissed everybody off by being political at the 1993 Oscars, but then who were the belles of the ball in 1995) and Quiz Show was seen as a little too Oscar bait-y and not as good as it should have been (I still think Quiz Show was the weakest of the bunch).

Huh. Looking at that list the one that seems like it should be the clear winner was Shawshank. Pulp Fiction as the second choice, but everyone knows stuff like that is relegated to the screenplay awards. And all five of those movies are still respected. By directors and actors who've gone on to have real careers. Meanwhile, who thinks anyone will remember The Imitation Game 6 months from now? Or Wild?
My guesses for this year? Redmayne, Moore, Arquette, Simmons, Iñárritu, "Glory" from Selma, Boyhood (original screenplay), The Imitation Game (adapted), and Birdman as Best Picture. And I bet that's what you all are predicting too.

I am almost with you, thneed. I'm going waaaaay out on a limb and predicting Bradley Cooper whoa will upset as Best Actor, although I'm rooting for Keaton. I also go with Grand Budapest Hotel for Original Screenplay. My guesses: Bradley Cooper Julianne Moore (and this will be THE moment of the evening for me. Lurve her!) Patricia Arquette J K Simmmons Imitation Game for Adapted Screenplay. Alejandro Inarritu for Director And Boyhood for Best Picture.

Hmm. I don't see Bradley Cooper winning. People are complaining about historical innacuracies in the movie, and that the real Chris Kyle wasn't the good guy portrayed on screen. That usually kills a movie's chances dead. Look at Zero Dark 30.
You might be right about original screenplay, though. Wes Anderson is like Quentin Tarantino or Sofia Coppola or Her, in that screenplay goes to the "quirky, arty" movie as its one token win. And he hasn't won yet. This could be his career nomination. Although, why now? He makes basically the same movie every few years. And my gut says Boyhood is enough of something different, from a guy that also has a "quirky, arty" reputation but still had tons of mainstream success, and no wins despite tons of nominations.
And OF COURSE it's an anti-Christian, evil godless librul agenda from the people who control Hollywood preventing Kirk Cameron from getting the praise and worship he so obviously deserves.

I don't have much interest in this year's ceremony outside of the fashion, but I will be very disappointed if Michael Keaton doesn't win best actor. I'm tired of actors winning the top prizes for playing autobiographical or biographical parts.

I skipped the Oscars this year but I googled the Memoriam. I'm utterly and completely biased, but I'm a little sad there wasn't more of big deal made over Robin Williams. I may be sappy as all get out, but I still can't believe he is gone.

If Stallone wins Best Supporting Actor, I'll die laughing.
