I hope Chris Rock's opening monologue is EPIC. I know he's rewriting it as we speak in light of recent events. I'm hoping for scorched earth myself!
The irony would be that the audience will give him huge applause, including the very execs, directors and producers who continue to perpetuate this vicious and exclusive cycle.

Why would that be ironic?
The directors, producers, and execs WANT to hear Chris Rock slam them. The harsher the better. That's why they hired him in the first place. White people love it when black people tell them they're being racist, because then they get to feel cool. Like they're the most enlightened, non-racist, white person. Like they're down. Part of the inner circle. The token white friend.
After all, if Chris Rock can participate in their circle-jerk, how bad can the problem be?

Here's a fascinating interview in THR with one black writer/director, one black producer, and one Asian showrunner. It also agrees with the points I've been making around here for the past week, and that makes me feel validated and smart, Some choice quotes: And they talk about why "diversity" efforts often become tokenism and fail (while also engendering a great deal of bad feeling about the whole issue). I really think this is important because you often have filmmakers of color, and executives talking past each other. The article also touches on why TV is better at this than movies (short answer: the economics allows them to take more risks).

I'm not even excited about them this year. I haven't seen many of the films. I just don't care. They have become so boring because there is zero suspense. Leo will win, Brie Larson will win, probably Stallone, maybe one upset, the Revenant will win everything. I'll watch the red carpet and the monologue but then just keep up with the rest on Twitter.

The "Revanant" sweeps the BAFTAs. I guess hiring every consultant known to man paid off for FOX. At least "Spotlight" won best screenplay.

I'm guessing The Revenant has it for Best Picture, but I'm really hoping for Mad Max (or even better, Brooklyn).
