With a few exceptions the nominations feel very predictable. I'm happy Black Panther got a nod and Willem Dafoe and Marina de Tavira were nice sort-of surprises in the acting categories. I admit I have not seen either Vice or Green Book, so not to judge sight unseen, but all the plaudits for those have me going... really?

I haven't seen Green Book either but even the trailer makes it look like its approach to racism would have been dated ten years ago so...no thank you. Really happy to see Melissa McCarthy get a nom since that basically is the win for her. Also a little surprised to see nothing for Crazy Rich Asians, I think those costumes were a lot more inventive than the 'pulled straight from the history books' costumes for Mary Queen of Scots. Also I don't think Ballad of Buster Scruggs should be considered a movie.

I just watched "Isle of Dogs" yesterday and it was one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen. I felt like my mouth was agape the whole time. It took me about fifteen minutes after the credits rolled to decide that I loved it. I haven't seen the Spider-Man movie but I did see Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet and found both pretty disappointing. I'll have to check out Mirai.

How the hell did "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" not get a Best Doc nomination? ?

Along similar lines, Bohemian Rhapsody getting nominated for Best Picture was a bit of a head-scratcher for me. And I say that as someone who actually liked the movie. Rami Malek is amazing in it but, aside from the Live Aid sequence, it's basically an average biopic. How the hell did "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" not get a Best Doc nomination? ? I KNOW! Biggest snub of the year as far as I'm concerned. That and RBG are probably the two documentaries that the most people actually saw last year, to not nominate it is a freaking travesty.

Yeah both Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book seem like films that would have come out in the 90s. Both are dated (and problematic) today. Disappointed they both received Best Picture noms.

I just realized that Widows got completely shut out, that's too bad.

How the hell did "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" not get a Best Doc nomination? ? The conspiracy theorist in me thinks this was because Tom Hanks is coming out with a Mr Rogers movie this year, and they want to save the Mr Rogers-related awards for that.

I really enjoyed "Green Book." I seriously doubt that movie would have come out in the 90's, because not to many people even knew what the "Green Book" was in the 1990's.
Don't go by what you see in the trailer.
Mahershala Ali should get an Oscar for just keeping a straight face during some of those scenes, and Viggo was great.

I get that the documentary and foreign language branches vote based on the entire field of eligible films and not just on the 1 or 2 that happened to be popular. And they are looking for qualities beyond enjoyability. BUT...When you have a documentary that breaks through to the mainstream and means a lot to people, doesn't that count for something? Give people something to root for when they watch the telecast and maybe they will actually care.
