I was thinking Larenz Tate. He's fine as shit and did such a good job as Frankie Lymon in "Why Do Fools Fall in Love". But he's too short. Damn. Still fine though.

Re: Marvin's underage conquests
I never read his biography, so I don't know the ages of the girls. I do know that in Sam Cooke's bio underage meant under 21. Cooke was with an underage girl, 19, at the time. I do know that Sam and Marvin toured once, so perhaps it was during that time.
If not, you can look at the times. People were having kids at 14; I know my mother did. In some parts of the south, it's legal to be with a girl as young as 15, so. . .

Hell, Jerry Lee Lewis married his 15 year old cousin. And he was good and grown at the time.

99.44%, I know you ain't a big fan of Denzel and I ain't mad at you ;D I just think Denzel would be the better actor to bring Marvin to life. As for the coloring, its funny but I have never thought of Marvin as "redboned" like TH. Maybe it was the drugs, but in the later years he was a pretty dark chocolate.
zacandmax I agree that Larenz would be an even better choice than Denzel if he weren't so short. Not only is he a cutie, he is also a very sweet guy (he's the cousin of my son's Aunt). He (like Regina King) really is a very gifted actor who has never really gotten his props. Maybe they can put some lifts in his shoes?

I never read his biography, so I don't know the ages of the girls. Denise Gordy was 15; I believe Marvin was 26 when their child was born. Jan Hunter was 16; Marvin was 33 (I think) and a married man. By Jan's own admittance, she was underaged at the time; I believe the age of consent in California (at that time) was 18. She told me she was worried that he would be arrested for statutory rape, but her mother approved of (and encouraged) the relationship, so it became a non-issue. Jerry Lee Lewis's cousin was 13 when they married, I thought? What, the '70s? I love Larenz, but he still looks 15. Still, with the right facial hair and some SERIOUS lifts in his shoes (Marvin was 6'2"), he could pull it off rather well.

So he sleeps with under-aged girls and beats women? Well no, seeing as he was murdered in 1984... Seriously, though. There are accounts of his overall assholishness and delusions of grandeur.[/color] Oddly enough, my mother and her mother met Marvin on my mom's 13th birthday and she said he was as nice as he could be. Marvin gave my mother the tam he was wearing in concert that night, and invited them all (my grandmother, mother and my mom's young friends) to a small get-together at his hotel. (Insert random and obvious joke here!) I think, like with anyone, he had his two sides - hence the book "Divided Soul" - but I also think it went deeper than that. I wouldn't be surprised if it was revealed that he was schizophrenic - I believe Donny Hathaway was as well (or manic depressive). He just strikes me as a very tortured soul. Not in that romantic V.C. Andrews kind of way, but for real. It makes me wonder what could've happened had he simply reached out for the help that he so desperately needed (as his wife and daughter would years after his death).

This makes me sad and my Marvin love just took a dip. Now I have to feel about him the same as I do R. I had no idea that Denise Gordy was only 15 and since her parents approved of her statutory rape, that made it ok? The parents of R. Kelly's 14 year old victim obviously agreed too since they took hush money in return for the girls' refusal to testify. Maybe that's why child molesters like Kelly figured if it was ok then its definitely ok now I mean after all its 2005. While I am fully aware (like many others in the Black community) that this shit has been going on way too long at what point are parents going to be held accountable for blessing the molestation of their young daughters? *gets off soapbox* Does this mean I have to break all my Marvin albums? As for Larenz . . . . he doesn't look 15 in person. I have seen him with facial hair, with some lifts, I think he could definitely pull off Marvin and do a fine job.

Jesse L. Martin, who plays Det. Green on Law and Order, has said he would like to play MG. He has the heighth, looks good in a suit, and can sing his ass off (he was in the play Rent, and he's in the movie).

I think they could do a lot worse than Jesse L. Martin ***cough*** Usher***cough***
If someone could just get a biopic of Jackie Robinson off the ground, that would be enough to distract Denzel.
