I know, this thread does terrible things to you. Everytime I click on it, I know I'm going to learn something that I don't want to know about Marvin Gaye. Yet it's like I have to. Seeing this thread on the first page is just too much.
But boy, I wish I were still ignorant.

I feel the same way about Gaye that I do about Richard Pryor. Sure, I know Pryor had his seriously fucked up side. And I know he had a horrible childhood. And I wish he'd been able to put it behind him, to stop drawing people into his torment. But in Pryor's case, I'm able to still appreciate the man's brilliance. Ditto Gaye.

I hear ya. All I knew about Marvin when I clicked on this thread is that he had a drug problem and his father killed him. Now, I know too much. I am going to just erase this knowledge from my brain and go enjoy the brilliance of "What's Going On". As bad as he was, Marvin was blessed and lucy enough to have one of the best voices of all time, IMO.
ETA: Jesse L. Martin would OWN this role.

When I listened to some of Prince's old stuff, I am reminded of Marvin...mostly because they both come off like they had serious struggles between their sexuality and their spirituality. And as mentioned upthread, Prince also had an underage lover, Marvin own daughter Nona, and that makes it really strange. Is it a prerequisite that you have to have sex with a minor to become a great musician? I'm on the Rattlerbrat Train of Hypocrisy myself. It could come out that Marvin kicked puppies and I would just nod and turn "Mercy Mercy Me" up as loud as I could. LALALALALALA! Oh! and JESSE FOR MARVIN! My moniker is actually the title of one of his booty shakin' songs . I'll change it soon. You know the original title was "Sanctified P*ssy", right? That's from "Dreams of a Lifetime", the posthumous release that's terrrrrrible. There's a song also on there called - ready for this one? - "(N*ggers Are) Savage in the Sack". To this day I have yet to listen to the song, but I know that it's been described as "uncomfortably lewd".

I, too, would love to see JLM in this role.

22 years ago today...*sigh*
You know, I'm starting to wondering about this Marvin movie. Anyone get the impression that it's one of those "unauthorized" joints? Because I find it ironic that Marvin has two wives, three children, and two sisters and NONE of them have spoken in support of this movie.

The last I heard of a biopic on him was at the very beginning of this year. Part of the reason a biopic hasn't already been made is because Motown music/record executives are unwilling to license the rights to the music he made during the period of his life that the producers of the biopic want to film.

That's a damned shame because his story really needs to be told from beginning to end. His life ended too early, brutally and suddenly. His contributions to R&B will never be matched or duplicated IMHO. Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke and Bobby Womack are always in heavy rotation during my daily commute.
