Count me among those who like Adele and her voice, but all her stuff starts to blend together for me too. I'd like to see her work with some different producers/songwriters and see what she can do. Topic? I went to see stand up comedy last night and one of the opening acts made some jokes about Adele. I like her stuff, though, and his jokes were pretty idiotic. Like, "you who's dumb? People who like Adele. And Drake, yuk yuk yuk." Is there anything really snarkable about her? I thought, with her, it was just a matter of taste and she hasn't done anything questionable or embarrassing. Some comedians are just dicks and some comedians/dudes, for whatever reason, just hate female performers who don't shake their ass and cater to straight males. Anyone remember how in the 90s a lot of dudes just absolutely hated Alanis? I mean, beyond not liking her music or the fact that she used "Ironic" wrong. I never quite got that either.

Adele is ruining her voice. She needs to kick the smoking habit for good.

Does smoking always ruin a voice? Marc Anthony and Sade are singers/smokers that seem to still sound great in concert.

It would depend on how much and how often. I know many, many musical theater actors that smoke like chimneys and still sound fine. Adele is still young so I'd wager her vocal issues at this point have more to do with her atrocious singing technique than the cigs.

I have heard before, here and other places, that her technique is bad. Could someone explain singing technique in layman's terms - I've googled but the explanations I've found are rather complex and technical and I don't really know anything about music.

Basically- you know how her voice always sounds like its cracking from emotion on the high notes? Like she's really squeezing from her throat? That's bad. Think of it as scraping on the vocal cords to produce a sound instead of vibrating them harmoniously. It damages them over time. I assume she thinks she needs that breaking quality to her voice to convey emotion and that why she keeps doing it. Kurt Cobain had similar issues with his voice, he has that same "voice breaking with emotion" style. She has lots of other technique issues that probably annoy trained singers (because they get all twitchy like that ) but that is the one that'll kill her. Edited for clarity!

I like that crackling thing she has going. I thought it was something her voice was naturally doing, meaning that it was not something she was forcing.
Now, that I have been informed of the poor technique, I wonder if there is a way she can still produce that sound in a way less harmful to her vocal chords.

I remember reading that Janis Joplin was told that the straining she did when singing would end up damaging her voice. Joplin thought this was necessary for her voice to convey her emotional pain and responded that she didn't want to be a bland singer, just so she could be a bland singer for longer.
