Hamatron- I immediately thought of that part too. And Kathy was PISSED that she wasn't even in the running for that part... just as Mary Louise Parker was pissed that Meg Ryan got her plum role in "Prelude to a Kiss". Persona and beauty go a long way with executives. And they always seem to come back with the reasoning that Hollywood is based on illusion. We want to see our best, prettiest self up there on the screen. Who knows how many great actresses lost out to Hollywood legends in the early days of film. I'm sure this problem has been around as long as movies have existed.
Kathy Bates is a genuine talent, but for the basis of this discussion, I doubt Charlize would ever be up for a the same role Kathy Bates. And to be fair, Kathy won an Oscar too, so she's going to get roles that (say) Margo Martindale or her ilk would never be in the running for.
IIRC, former Greecie, Diablo Cody LOVES Charlize and they're collaborating on a new project together.

I get the feeling "non beautiful" in Hollywood = not a size 2. If the actress is truly unconventional looking, then she's relegated to TV, theater or as the funny side-kick in film (or low budget indies). I have a male friend who's gotten a lot of work on TV the last couple of years. He is stunning (at least to me and everyone I show a picture to). Casting directors only offer him the boring boyfriend or psychpath/villain roles because unless you're A-list talent on TV, those seem to be the only roles he's "qualified" for. He can't even get a 'side-kick' role because no one would believe it such a beautiful man would be a distant #2 without some personality flaw. But I think my friend has a really good attitude about it. He knows he's not going to be A-list, and he's found his nitch, and it's paying him well. But it is frustrating to him that he's been pigeonholed so much by the people who cast TV shows. OT: I want a name!

I think the bottom line is that you do have to show the goods at the end of the day no matter how ugly or good-looking you are. If a casting director is not looking for a tall blonde glamourpuss and is unaware of Charlize's work over the last 15 years (they would have to be deaf, dumb and blind or landed from another planet to be unaware of her work), then I guess they are looking for somebody else! At this point in her career, she seems to be taking rejection personally, which is bizarre. I could see an Emily Rata-who-ski or Alessandra D'a-whatshername making these accusations. When I think of them, I just think "boobs".
Charlize should have a discussion with Sharon Stone - another tall, ballsy, glamorous blonde who I believe is doing more TV work now. I don't see her getting warrior queen lead roles or whatever meaty roles Charlize is looking for. Wonder if she got rejected for Wonder Woman?

I am beyond tickled and flattered that you remember me saying this, and I also want to use this opportunity to state that either Hemsworth brother should feel free to deliver himself to my chamber of secrets at his earliest convenience. Topic: Charlize's storyline on Arrested Development was a rare misstep on that show for me, but I thought she was pretty good in Young Adult. And post-Mad Max she would have to do something REALLY bad for me to dislike her, although of course these most recent comments are pretty dumb. I think whoever up thread said that she probably has a very juvenile/grrl power view of feminism really hit the nail on the head.

Charlize in Million Ways To Die In The West.
Truly THE most unwatchable movie I have seen in a decade, and she was the worst part of it. I know it takes true acting ability to pull off a genuine laugh at the masterbatory jokes of Seth McFarland, but that's why they call it acting. Not only are her laugh responses to his "celebrated/good natured wit" strained, toward the end they start to give off a, "Get me the hell away from this creep before he uses my skin for a lamp" vibe.

Charlize's storyline on Arrested Development was my least favorite from the original series, and her performance was pretty weak. If I ever feel like watching AD reruns, I tend to skip those episodes.
I liked Young Adult and thought she was good in it, but I don't recall anything comedic about her performance specifically. I remember there were cringey-funny moments in the movie, but they didn't come from Charlize doing any comedic acting, if you know what I mean.

Several years ago, I auditioned to be an understudy to a very well-known actress who was going to perform at a local theatre in a fairly famous play, and the role required nudity. I worked on my audition pieces with my acting coach, and after our session, he told me, "Your monologues and sides (selections from the script to use at auditions) are great, and you're going to do a great job. But they won't cast you." I asked him why not, and he said, "Frankly? You're too pretty. Have you seen (actress) recently? She's skinny and kind of funny-looking, and not particularly attractive. That's great for the role, not so great as far you're concerned." He was right: even though I had a fantastic audition, I wasn't cast.
I think it's hard to tell what some casting directors and other decision-makers want. Sometimes they themselves don't know who or what they're looking for until someone walks into the room and all the planets align. But having said that, I think Charlize is in an extremely fortunate situation where she has her own production company and can develop her own projects.
