No "harsh barley" takers? I still can't discover what it means...

I saw ads saying there would be two episodes tomorrow, and something about "saving Happy Endings".
MrsCatHead, I'd guess harsh barley is just sort of alliterative but it isn't a reference to anything. I could be wrong, though.

My daughter and I say it all the time now, even though we don't really get it.
I'm sad to see it go but maybe it's for the best. I hate when a show just gets worse and worse as the seasons go on but stays alive long past it's use by date.

Its only been on for 3 seasons. More like 2 and a half since the first season was only 13 episodes. I think it still has plenty of life left. The problem is that ABC keeps moving it around. First they moved it to Sunday nights at 10:00 with Don't Trust the B. Then they axed Don't Trust the B and doubled up on Happy Endings. Then they moved it back to Tuesday. And then they took it off the air for two months to replace it with The Taste and Splash. Now its back on Friday nights again with the double episodes. All the time with little promotion. No wonder the ratings are so low. NBC gets a lot of crap for the way it treats its shows and deservedly so but I think ABC is even worse. It has had a lot of promising shows over the years that got decent ratings but needed nurturing and instead ABC kept moving them around until they were dead. See Better Off Ted, Don't Trust the B, Men in Trees, Pushing Daisies...

ABC likes to use the half hour after Modern Family to try out new shows, and as far as I can tell, none of those have been breakout hits with loyal viewers. Happy Endings had the potential to be a solid hit, and they should have put it back where it started to gain ground before moving it all about. I wonder what ABC considers an acceptable dropoff in ratings in the 9:30 time slot? I don't understand how ratings work with DVRs. The only reason I've caught every episode of Happy Endings is because I have the DVR set for new episodes and it randomly pops up (very randomly!). Do DVR recordings not count? Am I killing shows I like with my DVR obsession? (Seriously, it's a problem. I never, ever watch anything in real time).

DVR viewing counts, for reporting to advertisers, if it's watched within 3 days (and they're just counting viewership to the commercial minutes). The networks also look at the viewing level to the program overall up to 7 days after a show airs. Anything after 7 days doesn't get counted at all.
The numbers have never been particularly good for Happy Endings. If they can draw a similar viewership level on Fridays as they did on Tuesday, it may be able to get another season, but it's long odds.

This is good to know. I often get two or three weeks behind on shows. I'll have to keep the 3-day rule in mind whenever I like a show with an iffy future.

Max was killing it in both those episodes. If ABC cancels this I hope that TBS picks it up and reteams it with Cougar Town.

I thought Alex was the MVP of both episodes. First, inadvertently running a child labor sweatshop out of Chuckles & Huggs, and then intimidating everyone with her (newfound) intellect. She reduced poor Dave to a glue-sniffing idiot.
