I dunno, I think it looks funny. I'll see it, but not in the theatre.

know it's a comedy and I'm sure she really has a heart!of!gold! in the movie I'm really hoping she doesn't; from the trailers at least she really does seem like a nasty person in the It's Always Sunny In Philladelphia mode and I'm in the mood for a black comedy. I have to say I'm a little surprised at the notion that it is in poor taste; maybe it's because I'm not an American but why is now in particular 'bad timing'?

Because right now public employees, including teachers, are under attack by politicians (many conservative but not all) and have a ton of bad press caused by folks blaming unions for all of our economic ills. Folks think of us as overpaid, lazy hacks. Just look at what's going on in Wisconsin. And where I live the mayor (a Democrat) has made no bones about his hatred of the unions and is trying to do everything in his power to weaken them. California is going to lay off a lot of teachers, and it's not just there.
So a movie with an incompetent teacher as the lead role is not something I'm particularly thrilled about as a public employee.

I saw this last night and liked it. Cameron's character is a mean, sarcastic, selfish woman, who lacks empathy and hates children. There are one or two sweet moments because she's not a total monster, but overall the character is likeable and sympathetic in spite of herself. And really funny. Cameron did a good job playing a villainess.

Yeah, she had practically no redeeming qualities, personality-wise. I'm glad they went that way with the character. She was really funny. In fact, most of the cast was great, even JT. I was squirming with discomfort but laughing during the dry-humping scene.

I have to admit, I thought it sucked. All the funny parts were in the previews. The only part that I liked was Jason Segel.

Also, education in general is under attack as the US education has plummeted compared to the rest of the industrialized world in the past several decades and teachers in particular have been demonized for this. There are many reasons for the decline in education, but I think teachers' competence seems to be one of the factors getting lip service. So a movie that implies that a completely amoral teacher can exist unpunished within the system is a little troubling.

So I ask my age-old question: worth a matinee or wait for cable?
