I've been in love with Kyle Chandler since "Homefront", so I hope it does well for his sake. And Ron Eldard (who has barely done any acting in the last few years).

New York Magazine has a story that this film is tracking poorly. Audiences aren't aware of it and aren't eager to see it if they do know it exists. I think the title is part of the problem. A large chunk of the under 35 audience has never heard about Super 8 film. It sounds like a superhero movie. It sounds like it'll be about 8 kids, but there are only 4 or 5. It is/was also a line of cheap motels which probably doesn't help.

I want to see this too. It looks great and has a neat E.T./The Goonies vibe. Funny, but that's part of the reason why I'm not interested in the movie. I was mildly interested until I saw the trailer, but the ET vibes completely put me off. I liked ET, but I don't care for movies that try too hard to be the next [insert acclaimed movie here]. That could just be a fault of the trailer and not the movie, and maybe I'll end up seeing it anyway, depending on how bored I am. But I don't think the trailer did a very good job of selling the film.

See I was ambivalent about seeing this based on the title when I heard about it. But when we took the little ones to see Thor, there were a good twenty minutes of preview on the front of it. I had been interested in seeing some of the stuff in those previews based on the teaser trailers, but the extended ones at Thor really put me off. All except for the one for Super 8. That one changed my mind. Besides, I have a soft spot for ET even after all these years.

It doesn't remind me of E.T., but I definitely get an old school Spielberg feel from it. I'm surprised there's not more anticipation, I've been wanting to see this since I first heard about it.
I get how the commercials are kind of nondescript, but I'm glad they don't give away the whole game, like most seem to do nowadays.

I don't know, I think kids today might not know what Super 8 film is, but I think that since everyone with a Iphone is an amateur filmmaker now as bstewart alluded to, kids today will relate instantly. It's a different medium, but the same principle as how 'Cloverfield' was made partly of 'found' amateur footage.
Granted, I haven't seen E.T. since I was an actual child (it came out when I was a year old), so I don't remember it too well, but I think that the old school Spielberg thing isn't TOO forced or trying too hard. It's doesn't play as, say, Quentin Tarantino or Wes Anderson dropping references to what they saw in film school. It feels organic and very personal for J.J. And, you know, I think it's different since it IS an Amblin/Spielberg produced film. It's one thing for a filmmaker to pay homage to another versus basically having said mentor say "let's make this tribute together."
I apparently need to see The Goonies, since all the reviews are making parallels with the groups of kids.
I am definitely interesting on hearing opinions of some folks who remember those movies and era better than I do. (It's set in the summer of 1979, FWIW).

"Outer Space" is, apparently, listed on my birth certificate, too. The long-form one.
I'm eager to see this film, too, if only because I want to see how close they'll push the "children in peril" boundaries.
PS: If you have an iPhone, get the app. It's free and lots of fun. Sortakinda like Hipstamatic for video.
