Yes, Finnick turned out to be one of my favorite characters of the series. I've never got the Finnick love. I get that his image was sex god/ lovable himbo, but he was secretely smarter, and more loyal than people imagined; but I'm clueless to the sainthood that he has been given by the fandom. He's likable and all, and his death is tragic, but he's been elevated to Katniss level of importance to some, and that I just don't buy. Anyhoo...I've seen tons of names tossed about, but for some reason, I always picture Zac Efron. Maybe I'm too limited in my imaginings, but he has that almost too pretty look to him, but can actually give a more layered performance. I really don't want to see Kristen Bell as Johanna. Really don't. I don't know for sure who I'd want it to be, but I know it wouldn't be her. I picture Johanna older, harder, and brunette. Just drawing a blank on who she should be. I'd like to see Ving Rhames as Chaff. Maybe Alex Skarswhatever as one of the older careers.

I don't know that I can explain why I like him so much...I just liked the way his relationship with Katniss turned out. I've heard the name Taylor Kitsch bandied about for him, and I can see it.
Not to bring up race arguments again, but I pictured Johanna as being black. I can't remember what descriptors the book actually gives her though.

I flove me some Taylor, but he seems too serious? dour? to pull off the lovable himbo part. He could do the post arena suffering/knot tying in D13 stuff just fine, but I can't see him doing the lighter parts of Finnick, if that makes any sense. I could easily see Johanna being a POC. I'm reminded of the hard as nails chick from Aliens. Rodriquez I think? I know that I don't want her to be someone like Leighton Meister or any CW type. I'd rather they went for extremely capable unknowns. I always pictured Johanna as white, she is from the pacific northwest and all, but I think it wouldn't be a big deal to make her a POC. As long as it isn't Zoe Saldana, or any one of her build. ETA: Here are two polls on options for Johanna and Finnick.

You know, I do want to see this movie. But then I read this article and I wonder if it's worth seeing. I can't even take this article seriously when it says, "When casting decisions for The Hunger Games were released, an online outcry arose over Jennifer Lawrence being cast as Katniss Everdeen, who is generally accepted by readers to be a woman of color, described in the books as having olive skin and dark hair." Maybe by "readers" that haven't read the books, or didn't pay attention, considering her mother and sister are blond haired, blue eyed with "light colored skin." Katniss was also described as having grey eyes and, well, I've never met an actual human with grey eyes. Thus a fictional character. That article also completely ignored the fact that Lenny Kravitz was cast as Cinna, even though in the book he's totally non-descript racially. Just with "short brown hair" and "green eyes." They coulda went with a white dude. (Although, that woulda been a damn shame. Lenny's lookin' good.) Josh what's-his-face. Awful! I didn't think he could act worth a damn, yet again (I've, unfortunately, seen him in other movies). When Katniss said he could throw 100 lb bags of flour, I lol'd. With those arms? Come on! He's supposed to be stocky and handsome, or something. Uh, no. Loved everyone else, though. Some of the Tributes were damned psychotic in the arena. The "adults" were amazing. Woody's wig was awful, but he sold it, as usual. Elizabeth Banks was pretty funny when she was allowed to be. I didn't get the point of President Snow showing up in this one, either. I guess just to have ZOMG DONALD SUTHERLAND in it. The best part about before the movie? Everyone in the theater laughed at the Breaking Dawn 2 teaser. Bahaha. (And there was, literally, only one empty seat in the entire theater. It was nuts.) That happened at our theater too! The whole theater cracked up during the trailer, which was LOLtastic, as Twilight always is. I loved the movie. I thought that the casting was excellent, especially Stanley Tucci, who was perfection. JL owns Katniss, IMO. I am really looking forward to seeing where they take the next two books.

I don't know why, but I always pictured Johanna as black too. Actually, in my mind she looked like what the actress playing Rue will probably look like in 10 years.
Fortunately, it seems like a lot of these tributes could be from any race (certainly Johanna, Beetee and Wiress could be any race, I think Finnick could easily be white or latino). I noticed when they were lined up for their interviews that some of the tributes (that we never really see again) were Asian. So hopefully they'll continue to cast diverse actors.

Most of the choices for Johanna are awful (Natalie Portman!?) but Linna Carter is sort of what I had in mind when I was reading.

I saw it this afternoon with my youngest and niece and nephew. I liked it a lot. I'm happy to see a strong, athletic, smart, emotionally conflicted female protagonist.
OT: I had my offical I don't give a shit moment at the theater: I go to the window to buy tickets "Four for the Hunger Games". Clerk looks me over, "that's 3 children and 1 senior discount" "What (I'm got some time before the pull date is up). I stop myself from correcting him.Wait, yeah, give me the discount I say.

Just home from seeing the movie. The theater was packed on a Sunday night. Really enjoyed it. JL was outstanding. She looked so young in some of her scenes. I never liked JH for Peeta, but to my surprise, I did find him to be kind of endearing at moments. My Only real complaint was the shaky camera stuff. I couldn't tell who was who on that last fight scene.
