Will this be the movie that finally wins Stephen Daldry his Oscar? How will he be able to fill his next movie with even more Oscar bait if he doesn't win this time?
(Sorry I'm still bitter that he and The Reader got nominated for Best Director and Picture instead of someone more worthy like Darren Aronofsky or Christopher Nolan.)
In all seriousness, from the buzz I wouldn't be surprised if Daldrey is nominated for Best Director, and the movie is nominated for Best Picture.
It hasn't done well at the precursors so far, but I don't think it necessarily has to be the movie that shows up everywhere as long as the guilds and other televised awards before the Oscars eat it up. I would predict Best Picture for it right now just because it does seem like something certain voters will love. Best Director seems a little bit more iffier because there's a lot of competition, and I don't see Dalry going 4 for 4. (Of course, I never thought he would be 3 for 3 either.)
However, and this is the main reason I opened a thread for this film is that while it may not have much buzz right now, someone at Awards Daily saw this last night, and thinks that voters won't be able to resist Sandra Bullock and Max Von Sydow.
I don't know how excited I am about Bullock possibly being nominated again so soon. I think she's probably a really great person and is a competent actress who can be quite charming in the right role, but I don't think she really deserved her first nomination or win. I can't be too upset though about another possible nomination for her because I do think she is trying to work at her craft more ever since she was doing all those bad movies especially rom-coms, and most of the time the best movie/person isn't even nominated or doesn't win.
However, I am very excited at Max Von Sydow possibly having a chance at winning. The only downside is that aside from possibly Patton Oswalt, I could see the category being crammed full of veteran actors, most of whom have never won before, so I don't know if this will be his year or not. Plus, I'll be torn on who to cheer for if it comes down to Christopher Plummer or him as the frontrunners.
Oh, and here's a funny meme based on Von Sydow's character.
