I think what works about it is that you can tell that the director is working out of a huge, genuine love for silent film and Old Hollywood tropes and stardom and wanting to make a film like that.
Jean's smile could be an alternative energy source. It's electric.

One thing I loved, and it requires another viewing to look more closely, is the little wink, wink, nudge, nudge in the movie marquee titles. When Peppy is taking care of George, she is starring in The Guardian Angel. When George despondently walks away from his burned out home, the movie in the background is The Lone Star. I'm sure there are more.
