Kiss Bond goodbye!
(If he was nervous, why didn't he get tipsy like "The Crown" crew? They seem like fun when they're loaded.)

I just watched his GG speech and it didn't come across to me as being all that bad. Sure, it was too long, too convoluted and somewhat self-aggrandizing, but the core message of his speech used an element of the work being honoured--the selling of arms in The Night Manager--to remind people that this greatly contributes to suffering, especially in places that already have too many other struggles. And yes, he overdid it a bit on emphasizing his own good works, but personally, I like it when celebrities show their charitable side, particularly when they roll up their own sleeves instead of just writing a cheque.
I don't think this overly wordy and somewhat self-centric acceptance speech is on the level with his Swiddles shenanigans last summer, and it's definitely no "I love my life" Julia Roberts moment. For me it's yet another example of our ultra-critical age's reflexive condemnation of anything that is less than politically perfect. As always, ymmv.

Taken on its own it probably wasn't that bad but when you add in the other 'look at me' actions he pulled it is pretty bad.

I think he wanted to give an Important Speech like Meryl Streep did, except his motives showed through.
He's been pushing the humanitarian image extra hard ever since the Taylor Swift relationship started to backfire.

For me it's yet another example of our ultra-critical age's reflexive condemnation of anything that is less than politically perfect. As always, ymmv. That's why I've been droning on about his (lack of) PR strategy. Taken for itself, it wasn't the Worst. Speech. Ever. or anything. Just like Hathaway's at the Oscars was well-intentioned, all about how human trafficking and poverty still exist. Tom probably meant well, too. It just came out all wrong. And you could see it in the reaction of the room: There's a reason all these people made those WTF faces. It just came out as super self-serving, no matter what his intentions. When you put it in context of the year he's had, IMO he just really squandered an opportunity to rehabilitate himself. Instead he doubled down on the ridiculousness. If this was a prepared speech, someone in his circle should have pointed out that it's unfortunately worded. If he did it spontaneously...Why? Why didn't he have a speech prepared, no matter how unlikely he thought a win was? He's in a vulnerable position right now when it comes to public perception. Don't leave anything to chance.

I only watched it once live, and the thing that made me super uncomfortable and annoyed was my perception that this was a prepared speech. Very prepared. As in, he practiced it over and over again in the mirror. Maybe my initial perception was off, but whatever the case, the biggest turnoff about this guy for me is his intense focus on crafting a persona to the point where the actual person is nowhere to be seen. It's like he's doing Taylor Swift, but he's doing it all wrong.

I gave him credit for a long time that "he means well" but I don't think he deserves that credit anymore. He's humblebragged way too many times. And he's smart enough to be able to pick out the thesis in that speech, and it was not "let's help South Sudan".
He also should be smart enough to know that bringing up one's humanitarian work is like bringing up one's attendance at Oxford/Cambridge/Harvard - you don't do it. You let others do it for you.

Maybe it would not have been so bad if he'd done it backstage when they have to answer all sorts of questions, then it would not have looked like, "LOOK AT MEEEEEE, I'm a HUMANITARIAN." And then I remember what was it he modeled last year, underwear? The problem I have with him is, he doesn't seem all that interesting and is trying too hard to appear interesting. The silliest part of The Night Manager, for me was when he was posing as a tough guy, those scenes just did not work for me and I found them laughable.

I imagine Taylor Swift is having a nice little chuckle over all of this.

It really makes it all the more sad that Tiddleswift didn't work out because they really are perfect for each other. I can see them practicing humblebrag, faux-earnest speeches in front of each other and giving notes.
