She forgot the words "and tired" pouring out of a milk carton. Uh oh. She committed one of the ultimate millenial sins. Labels. As a Gen X'r I'm confused. Is the word sick no longer used as a compliment when not taken literally? If it still is, this tattoo is actually kinda brilliant with its doubling meaning and all. But if it's not, I'm with the millenial. Don't label yourself. Words have power, especially when it comes to ailments. If you think you're literally sick, you WILL be LITERALLY sick. As a Gen Xer, I always felt one of Millennials' biggest calling cards is their strict adherence to labels, sub-labels, and sub-sub labels. I've never understood the claim that "Millennials aren't into labels." I'm guessing that was started by a Millennial. It's not my intention to be mean, but literally every piece of writing I come across is about Millennials, Baby Boomers, or Millennials vs. Baby Boomers. After a while, it becomes tiresome. But back on topic . . . I can't believe Lena even gets this much attention from anyone.

She must have not been getting enough attention. That's been the situation her whole life.

My God, you've really put your finger on it! I can guess it's because that generation were raised with labels -- all the Pokemon-type games where things are categorized and labeled, all the anime like Sailor Moon where characters were labeled by color and element, all the fuss in education about labeling students with autism or ADHD, food labels warning of peanuts or glucose. The labels on fanfic that say lemon, shmoop, makor character death. The labels on sexuality. One can't just say anymore "Well, sex is OK, but it's not the biggest thing in my life." One has to be an aromantic ACE cisfemale and God help the person who mislabels you. I'm active in writing communities and I see this a lot from fiction consumers.
Older me wants to say it's a way of dealing with the intense anxiety of the maturation process.

Sometimes it comes across as too precious, but they seem to have more issues than any previous generation. I'm friends with some wonderful Millennials who aren't the micro-labeling types. I think they get exhausted by the sheer volume too. LOL. At any rate, Lena epitomizes the worst of Millennial stereotypes.

I opened this story because I wanted to see what her new "controversial" tattoo looked like: linkIs controversial a new way of saying ugly? Lord, all her tattoo work is hideous. Good god. Why?

The label conversation is fascinating to me because I deal with college age kids in my job and we had a training about gender identity. I've never felt so old and out of touch. There are all these new categories, and there are people who are opting not to be put in any of them.
Now I know how my dad felt back in the day when I tried to explain east coast vs west coast rap.

Well, if you want to feel even more old, which I increasingly do, college-age kids may be too YOUNG to be Millenials. The cutoff year is 1996 so the youngest millenials are 23. The oldest are getting close to, gulp, 40.
