Yes, excellent description, huntergrayson. Just saw it, and I'm really having to process what I just saw. It definitely does not say one way or the other whether cults are good or bad. They're just another way of understanding and exploring The Meaning Of It All.
But I thought something was going to go horribly wrong during the motorcycle scene in the desert, and then JP and PSH have suddenly "broken up" and it appears to be years later. It felt like I missed a few reels between that scene and the scenes in England. I didn't enjoy it as much as Boogie Nights or Magnolia, but it was... interesting.

That was my issue with it as well, Freddie just kind of disappears on the motorcycle, and the next thing we know he's in Massachusetts and apparently broken off with The Cause. Then next thing we know The Master somehow magically calls him in a theater and summons him to England, and when Freddie gets there it's clear The Cause wants nothing more to do with him. So, like, why did The Master tell him to come to England if he didn't want him there? It felt very disjointed and I have no clue what happened really.

I finally saw this and am really glad I did. I also had problems with the ending as most of you did. JP did an outrageous job in this, holy cow. I really didn't recognize the Joaquin Phoenix of Walk the Line, Return to Paradise... he has Daniel Day-Lewis qualities to his acting. Really enjoyed Amy Adams, as well as Rami Male.
