Spike Lee has admitted that he hasn't even seen the movie nor does he plan to, so his opinion counts for jack shit. He just has a huge hate-on for Tarantino so that makes him incredibly biased. Besides which, I seriously doubt Samuel L. Jackson would keep working with the man if what Lee says is at all true.
I like the moive but I wouldn't say I loved it. It made me very uncomfortable which I suppose was probably the point, slavery was an ugly business and it should make people uncomfortable.

Read how committed Leo DiCaprio was, shedding blood for his art.

for his art.
Ooh, I *knew* it was real! At the time, that looked like the kind of scene that ends up on a Cracked list, like "directors who used terror" or something.

I feel bad for Kerry Washington in that scene, getting Leo's blood all over her face out of nowhere. Ick.

I've read (but can't confirm) that she was smeared with fake blood after the fact (it did seem more orange to me). I remember thinking it was an odd moment for him to be bleeding.

Oh, so that's what happened! I was definitely confused at that part, all, "Wait, when did he hurt his hand?"

It was completely random. I couldn't tell the table was glass, if he'd cut himself on the skull, if he'd cut some other part of himself in a rage... It did add to the frenzy of the scene.

I just got back from seeing this but I really can't see why everyone is so surprised. I am Black - take it for what it is - and i knew going in that the N word was used throughout - it doesn't bother me but I cannot see how someone would have known this going in and still go and claim that they were offended. (did I read that wrong?) Secondly - this is nothing but a straight up exploitation, slave revenge, 70s ultra violent throwback movie. Yes there are some grisely scenes, but that makes it all the more rich in the eventual payback. How else could the legend of Django (the D is silent hillbilly) There is also however, some great acting going on. (DeCaprio, Fox - easily his best role since Ray, Waltz, Jackson & Don Johnson) To me just about all of Tarantino's movies play out the same. They have some very black humor, doublecross/revenge, ultra over the top violence, and they are steeped with eye winks and shout outs to all of the older movie genre's that he loved back when he was a movie clerk. Spike Lee can complain all he wants that is his right, but personally I have not listened to Spike Lee since around 25th Hour back in 2002. I don't agree with him on this movie but he also doesn't like Tyler Perry who I also hate, but I wouldn't begrudge Perry the ability to make his movies as he sees fit - I will just avoid them. (Really everyone should avoid them) For what it is worth, my crowd - Northern VA middle to upper middle class 90% white, seemed to enjoy the movie. I will say that it was at least 30 minutes too long, but that is Tarantino for you.

I was surprised b/c I've never heard the n word used so many times, period. In any setting. My friends don't use it, I don't hear it in music I listen to, so I wasn't prepared to hear it used so casually onscreen, even in a film with slavery at its heart. Tarentino doesn't personally offend me but I question some of his choices here, as a viewer. YMMV.
OTOH, I don't think Spike Lee--or anyone--can criticize a movie he hasn't seen.

I saw it earlier today and it was just average to me. The last hour or so was decent but the rest of it just plodded.
