That was a lovely photo, and I think they probably knew then that they were unlikely to have another anniversary. It was their 73rd anniversary, not normally an occasion they would release a photo for.

This may come out snarkier than intended but, Is there a specific royal protocol that dictates only male heirs were allowed to walk behind the casket? Why were Beatrice, Eugenie and Zara not part of that procession? I feel like maybe Edward’s kids are too young but those three are adults. There may be something specific, I just haven’t seen anything that mentioned it.

Anne was part of the procession so I don’t think it was limited to just male heirs.

(Mind you, Zara just had a baby and, if I was her, I wouldn't want to do the walk; I'd stumble in my sleep-deprived state and make an ass of myself.) Princesses B and E could have walked. But maybe not in the sky-high heels they were sporting...

Yeah, I think the fact that they all disable themselves with heels kind of rules out walking behind the coffin.
I think it's a general sexist thing, rather than a specifically royal sexist thing. Traditionally here you'd have the male relatives carrying the coffin, so I suppose that evolves to the male relatives walking behind when the coffin is being carried by others. Having said that, I've seen plenty of women walking behind as well, so who knows. Maybe it was more due to the fact that Zara and Eugenie only recently gave birth and might not have felt up to it (I think Eugenie had a c-section), which would have just left Beatrice (I'd say Louise and James are too young to be doing that in the glare of the TV cameras). Add in the heels and the thick coats they were all wearing on what was actually quite a warm day, then I don't think it would have been a comfortable walk.

Paul Maxwell and so many like him, inexplicable loss of life. Sinn Fein can take its apology for Pr purposes and shove it. They have far too many other things to apologize and expain about IRA links and so forth As do the other side of loyalists and unionists UVF and UDA. Dublin, Monaghan bombings and the Miami showband. I hate both sides, I hate it all, the unnecessary loss of life over decades, both have caused untold hurt and grief on this tiny island. All of it pisses me off. I believed in and had faith in the work the much missed John Hume ( Northern Ireland John Lewis)and Mo Mowlam did. Sadly we don’t have their likes around now.
