Do you think they can right the ship for the next two seasons? Because it is just more characters, more B and R and less Jamie and Claire. Although A Breath of Snow and Ashes might be my favorite book in the whole series so I am happy they are adapting it for season 6. I think if they remember to keep Claire and Jamie in the foreground (and not Bree and Roger) and remember not to sacrifice character for plot, they can do okay. The Fug Girls recap of the final episode points out a lot of places where they made the mistake of foregoing character moments in order to push the plot along and how that was a mistake. They also described Roger as a "wimpy historian who looks like a microwaved Bee Gee" so it is worth the click just for that. As for a bunch of new characters coming in, they would be wise to...not do that. Let's focus on and develop the characters we already have and love. They kept Murtagh around when (I believe) he's dead in the books at this point, so it's not out of the ordinary for them to do that. Hand over the important stuff that involves another character to an already established one like Murtagh (unless they would really have to act OOC in order for whatever to happen). And really - to again quote the Fug recap, find a way to make people care about Roger and Bree or sideline them. Just send them back to the 1970s. It will be fine. And I'd totally be down with a John Grey spin-off (and I think David Berry has said he is open to it). That would help solve the problem I have where they created this interesting and likable character in John Grey and then just leave him on the sidelines and give him nothing to do other than rush in and use his influence to save the Frasers when they land in trouble. He deserves better than that. If he's off having his own adventures, that would only benefit the character.

Ok, it literally took me 3 weeks to finish the last 15 minutes of the season finale. That right there tells me a lot. I HATED this season. There I said it.
Brianna needs to be recast, period. The minute she opens her mouth, any energy that had built up just gets sucked out of the scene. And she does not rise to her cast mates at all. I can handle Rankin as Roger, because he's good opposite other actors and there is some cool stuff for him coming up, but Bree needs to be more.
This is one of my favorite of the books - I tear through it getting to the Brianna meeting Jamie, then through finding Roger, then him coming back. This season had no suspense there at all.
The Fiery Cross is my least favorite book, but if someone comes in and just EDITS instead of changing things it would be FINE. These books are enormous. You have 13 hours. There is plenty of Jaime and Claire's storyline to power the whole show.
One of my favorite plots in DoA, that they cut out - Jaime and Claire are alone in their newly built cabin, and he says he's going to go hunting before the weather gets bad and she doesn't need to go with him. Claire doesn't agree, but understands. Then she wakes up and he's not back and just feels like something is wrong. She knows he said not to worry, but she does. It's started snowing in the meantime, but she decides she has to go after him. She tries to track him, going off of what he's taught her about tracking and what she knows about him, even though she can't see his footprints in the newly fallen snow. She does find him, having fallen and laying in the snow. His back has gone out and he can't move, which had happened before but he was too embarrassed to tell her. She gets him under a tree and some branches so the two of them won't freeze to death until the next morning. Then they get frisky and Ian finds them both.
Seriously!!! That alone could have been an ENTIRE EPISODE. I apologize, I am worked up. It's not even about the books now, it's also about how great the first two seasons were, and Cait and Sam, John Gray, Ian, Murtagh, Fergus and Marsali, and Jenny and Ian all being SO great, it makes me angry about the decline that's happening.

I would of LOVED that! Maybe now that Cait & Sam are producers for the next seasons, they'll be able to help with the way things are planned out? *fingers crossed*

Last season I was pretty disappointed in the direction of the show. I found some like minded people on Twitter and I followed them, mainly just to kvetch about the things we didn't like about the season. Well, now that we're in Droughtlander season and don't have much to talk about, I have discovered that these people are Sam/Cait shippers and truthers. Now that they don't have the show to complain about, they are scouring S&C's social media and are convinced they are having a romantic vacation together in Hawaii. I know I need to unfollow, but it's like a train wreck and I can't look away.

I know I need to unfollow, but it's like a train wreck and I can't look away. Yikes. I really don't get the crazy shippers. Like, dude, they are just co-workers. This is their job. The end. I tried to find some fun discussion out there about the show this season in podcasts, and it was basically impossible to find any that weren't just people breathlessly going on about how wonderful and romantic everything was. The only time anyone was slightly critical was when things that were in the book didn't happen on the show. I did find one podcast (that I think is done by a husband/wife team) where one of the hosts was mildly like, "Guys, I don't think Bri is working for me" and that's the closest they got to criticism. I mean, I wasn't looking for a "We Hate Outlander" podcast, but I wanted someone who could look at it with a critical eye and hopefully be funny about it (the way the Binge Mode podcast treats Game of Thrones and the Harry Potter franchise - the hosts clearly love both, but they also know they aren't perfect). But everything was just the hosts waxing poetic about how perfect it all was. At this point, I don't know how much recasting would help. The actress doesn't help the situation, but Brianna is just not a great character period. And her "romance" with Roger is really pretty off-putting. I don't care about them. If the show is smart, they will back-burner them next season. As the crazies have demonstrated, people are here for Cait/Sam. Not a warmed over version of their characters. I haven't read the books so I don't know where this goes, but the thing that seemed interesting for next season was idea of Jamie getting caught up in spy/intrigue crap in the ramp up to the Revolutionary War. That would give the show plenty of action/adventure, and would easily loop in characters who are actually interesting that we actually care about - Murtagh, John Grey, Fergus and Marsali. If they won't send them back to the future, then just let Brianna and Roger go hang out at Fraser's Ridge and bond over their baby or whatever. They can pop up occasionally when Claire and Jamie want to see their grandson. Otherwise, leave them aside. No. One. Cares.

kostgard, have you tried the Totally Normal Hangoutlander podcast (check itunes)? I haven't listened to the pod, but their online reviews of the episodes, especially season 4 have been fair but critical. Also, some of them have been blocked by Sam and Cait, so they have to rely on others for info.

OMG these ladies are nuts. I can't quite follow all of it because they mostly communicate in GIFs and memes and vague statements, but they are breaking down all of Sam's IG stories and tweets for clues that he is with Cait. Apparently they are now hitting Las Vegas together. A lot of their tweets are dismissing the "antis" (anti-shippers). I might have to take this over to the Crazy Fandom thread.

Okay, I follow both on Instagram, and most of Sam's posts are promotions (man's gotta make bank somewhere. Don't know how much Starz pays). He's promoting his fitness challenge/whatever thing, or the show, or something else. The Las Vegas post was a promotion for Audi. And honestly, unless there is other social media/media verifying he was actually in LV at that point in time, there's no knowing. I also follow the Queer Eye guys, and thinking about stopping because they constantly promote stuff and it's annoying to get through all their posts. But in seeing them, you can tell that they are simply timed, coordinated releases and not necessarily where that person is at that point in time. Otherwise the QE guys went to Japan, then zipped back home real quick to promote a product, then zipped back to Japan. Trying to build any sort of narrative about a celeb's life based on an Instagram account that is used to generate money rather than just share pictures is asinine.
