I recorded the 20/20 but did manage to stay awake for the first half of it. Really interesting to hear Woodward and Bernstein talk about it, but the thing that really stood out to me was, geez louise, when they were talking about Nixon and his delusions and power trips and criticism of the media, it was exactly the way Trump is behaving.

And in "thanks to the internet" news, now it's easier to find out more information about the peripheral details, such as Katharine Hamnett, the artist who designed the Choose Life tee. Also, 11/25 is the 33rd anniversary of Do They Know It's Christmas? ETA: Listening to this song as an adult, it reminds me a lot of Hey Ya! and other songs with upbeat pop melodies masking betrayal and heartbreak. The mournful version of "Take On Me" puts the original version on this list, too. "real" history: not much at the mo.

Edit While on not 'real' history the best ever Christmas song will 30years old on Thursday 23rd Fairytale of New York ! Shane will be 60 on this Xmas day (hope I've not jinxed him eek!) Tho sadly it will also be 17yrs since Kirsty Mccholl died tragically December 2000. link

Fun fact: my brother forced my mom to start going through the wall of boxes lining their garage and sorting through the remains of three different estates (my maternal grandmother's, her sister's, and my paternal grandparents). In one of the boxes from her mother's belongings, she found a "Choose Life" t-shirt. My brother suggested that it was either mine, or purchased as a gift for me by my uber-cool Mawmaw. So I get this phone call from my mom (who, it should be noted, is starting to show more and more signs of memory loss and confusion), asking about the t-shirt. I had bought that shirt in the summer of 1984, just before leaving for east Texas to spend some time with the grands. I must have left the shirt in a dresser drawer at Mawmaw's (with the tag still on it!), and she never found it (she would definitely have mailed it to me or brought it on her next trip to Austin). It must have been packed away and put in storage with all that other stuff in the garage. So now, we're waiting for '80s Day at the high school, so ds3 can wear it and impress the hell out of her teachers. And I might just give it a trial run today...

A hundred years ago today was the Halifax Explosion, the largest man-made explosion at the time. A French cargo ship loaded with explosives hit a Norwegian war relief ship in the Halifax harbour. A fire began, which drew onlookers to the water's edge, a fatal mistake. Over 2000 people were killed instantly, several hundred more over ensuing days and months, and it's thought hundreds more that were unknown because of migrant workers and poor record-keeping (and records being destroyed in the blast). Half the city was levelled, and a 15-foot tidal wave engulfed the wreckage. To make matters worse, the city was hit with a massive blizzard the next day. Survivors were found huddled together, frozen to death.
Help poured in immediately, especially from Boston. Which is why Nova Scotia gifts Boston with a big beautiful Christmas tree every year to this day.

I just listened to a podcast episode about this. The idea that the floor of the harbor split open was horrifying, and more so the tremendous death count.
