Posting on the sly at work so I don't have time to look it up, but I believe he did an interview with the same reporter years ago when they wanted to play a clip of him acting and he said that once a project was over he didn't like to watch himself. This was because he knew he would find imperfections and wouldn't be able to "fix" it. So I took that to mean he watches while in production for feedback, etc., but then just kind of leaves it behind. Knowing that, I kind of side eye NPR. They couldn't just ask him about the scene and edit it in later? Seems a bit ridiculous if it isn't a live show.

Ok, Driver stan here. I think he's probably a pretentious a-hole, but he's damn talented and he did make it very clear in the interview with Terry Gross in 2015 that he couldn't watch himself/hear himself, that it really drove him crazy. And honestly if it causes him grief, why do it? I can see how it might affect your performance.
Doesn't explain why he walked out though. He was super nice and thoughtful when he was on NPR the first time.

I don’t have much to add to the conversation but thought I’d share that I like to annoy my husband and son by referring to his Star Wars character as Rylo Ken. I messed the name up once and they made fun of me so now I do it on purpose and it makes me laugh. Ah, the simple joys in life. I did like the SNL skit on Undercover Boss he did in character I know someone who is a big Star Wars fan, and he named his son exactly this, Rylo Ken. As a play on the name of the character.

If he's doing promo for Star Wars and Marriage Story at the same time, he's probably supremely stressed and that interview was the last straw.
Now, I also think that such interviews are part of his job and he should cope better with that particular stressor.
He is a fabulous actor. And doesn't seem to be a terrible person if not particularly great at the promo aspect of celebrity. I hope he apologizes to Terry Gross.

Can we stop excusing everything as a mental health issue? Driver has clearly stated before that he doesn't like to watch himself because he finds imperfections in his work - which is a very normal response that a lot of people when they forced to watch themselves, or hear a recording, or re-read an essay, etc. It's not the excessive, irrational fear of a phobia... And even if it was, the recommended response to a phobia that is affecting your life and work is exposure therapy so you're taught to master your fear. It's not expecting the world to accommodate your irrational responses by not doing normal things... like playing a clip of a movie in an interview designed to promote said movie.

If it's a phobia, I wouldn't expect outsiders to dismiss it in the name of "exposure therapy". I would expect them to be kind and accommodate that phobia as requested, which NPR did. But I wholeheartedly agree that not every uncomfortable feeling people have constitutes "mental illness", and there's no reason to be so quick to diagnose mental illness in people who are not indicating anything of the kind themselves.

I haven't watched this guy in anything, but reading all this makes him sound exhausting.

Definitely agreed! I certainly wouldn't excuse NPR's or any other entity purposefully exposing someone to a phobia without their consent. I merely meant that if he really had a phobia, Adam should probably pursue exposure therapy or cognitive behavior therapy of his own accord so he can participate in the expected activities of his work.

What if something is happening in his marriage & that is why he reacted the way he did? Being alone in a booth (weird way to interview btw) with his thoughts must not have helped his nervousness.
Many actors have problems watching them selves. I remember that Jeremy Renner found it especially difficult to watch himself as Dahmer & also he watched the Hurt Locker so many times he just couldn't anymore.

He's also pretty much skipped all of the Star Wars media stuff. I haven't seen him in ANYTHING (save for 1 red carpet walk- with no interviews). He is a MAJOR character in this film, yet he is no where to be seen? I mean, ehh- I don't particularly care (and if I ever had to do stuff like this I would opt out as much as possible- yet... I do NOT do stuff like this, it's not part of my job). I just kinda feel like: You sign up for Star Wars... freakin Star Wars... if red carpets/media/interviews aren't your thing then don't sign up to be a major character in one of the hugest movie franchises of all time.
I hear the world's tiniest violin crying for him at this very moment. :/
