WebsiteRyan Murphy, he of the subtle, understated works Popular, Nip/Tuck, Glee and American Horror Story has created, or invented as he claims, "horror comedy" about a Masked Maniac Serial Killer terrorizing annoyed, self-absorbed Millennials on a New Orleans college campus. Starring some people who have screamed for their suppers before: Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Roberts, Nick Jonas, Abigail Breslin, Niecy Nash, Lea Michele, Diego Boneta, Nasim Pedrad, and relative newcomers (and really really really pretty people) Skyler Samuels, Keke Palmer, and Glen Powell. The death of Chanel #2 was worth the 2 hours alone, although I thought the whole thing was rather hit and miss, and almost overly too stylish. Thoughts?

I enjoyed it. Lots of campy ridiculous fun.
Yes, it was stupid and there were silly plot holes, but who cares? They killed off several characters in the first (double) episode in lots of gruesome ways, and introduced a couple of mysteries (who is the Red Devil and what is his/her motivation, and who was the bathtub mom and who is the now grownup baby?).

Dammit. I wasn't going to watch, but how can I resist a New Orleans college campus. I may have to give this a shot, even though I've heard pretty mixed reviews.

I wasn't Impressed. I want to like it but I found myself bored at time & channel surfed.I'll give it a couple of more weeks to see if I like it or not.

I thought I had this figured out within the first half hour, and that's when I decided to check out, cause I need a good mystery to keep me interested. Now I'm second guessing my guess. Aside from that, I loved this show for the first few minutes and then starting hating it more and more each minute it went on. There were too many jokes that fell flat and the overall tone was try-hard, like really REALLY hard. I'm a Heathers fan and every time something like this comes along I can't help but compare and contrast, and nothing seems to compare. Jawbreaker came close, though. That was back in the dark-heroin-chic-grungy 90's, and I don't know if a dark horror-comedy like Scream Queens can ever truly work in this PC-era. Some lines are too offensive, others not enough. It's like "edgy" doesn't come naturally anymore for the writers or for the audience. I just kept cringing.

Ug. I don't know that I am going to make it through this show. The constant racism/homophobia/bad acting from the lead characters/villains and the calculated likability of the main girl (Grace?) really rub me the wrong way. There is something really off with the tone here. I feel like there's no recognizable humanity to hold onto.
They are obviously trying to camp up horror tropes and play with archetypes... but Ryan Murphy isn't bringing anything fresh or insightful (at least, he's not in the first 2 hours). The Scream series already did this, and led a whole new era of snarky horror flicks... that has been flourishing the past 15 or so years.

Heh. The only reason I started watching this is the New Orleans college aspect, because I went to Tulane. Sure enough, the front of "Wallace University" is, in fact, the front of Tulane.
That said, I"m only 13 minutes in and it is pretty annoying. I'm just here for the Tulane glimpses.

I'm on my third attempt to get through the first episode. I agree with the poster who said it's hit and miss. I want to like this show because it does remind me a little of Jawbreaker. So far, the best part is Nasim Pedrad's character who is permanently stuck in the 90s. Her hair, clothing, and pre-internet cultural references will be an amusing gag.
I just read somewhere that Chanel #3's earmuffs are a nod to Princess Leia. I had no idea Carrie Fischer's daughter was already grown and acting. I am so old!

I've still only seen the first episode, but I'm mainly here for the Tulane/New Orleans views. Like the coffee shop, which is actually a PJ's and just around the corner from the apartment I lived in. I spent many an hour there studying, writing, or getting away from it all. Though the barista I liked was much hotter. And the early golf scene on the quad was actually two quads. When showing Chanel, it was the UC quad with McAlister Auditorium in the background. When showing the guys, it tended to be the next quad over, Newcomb quad, with Newcomb Hall in the background. Oh, and none of the sororities or fraternities had houses that nice. I think that's probably a house on Audubon Place, a very wealthy gated street. I might watch the second episode, but I really am just here for the nostalgia. Though I graduated in '94, so even the "old" scene is after my time.

I couldn't get through the entire episode. I'll try one more time, but that's it. Too much other stuff I'd rather watch.
