Saw this last night and was blown away by the performances and sensitive storytelling. It's a hard film to watch for the first half, for a completely different reason why the second half is equally riveting. Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay deserve every award as it didn't feel like watching actors at work but a voyeuristic glimpse of two people trying to navigate their own sense of reality. Fantastic film.

I thought the film was fantastic too. I said in the Now Playing thread that I think the film did a really good job balancing the tone, particularly in the first half. Its gripping and it makes it clear what a precarious position Ma and Jack are in but it doesn't devolve into misery porn. It also never got too sentimental in the second half. Other than one big scene, the times I teared up were over little moments.
Brie Larson for sure will get an Oscar nomination and I think she has a good shot to win. Jacob Tremblay was terrific too. And it was nice to see Joan Allen in a good role again too.

I had to look this up to see what it's about. Has anyone read the book? After reading the description of the story, I think I'm more interested in reading the book than seeing the movie.

I read the book when it first came out. It was well written but I didn't care for it much. It is written entirely from the perspective of a 5 year old boy. Which is clever and I admire the author's commitment but I found it got tiresome after awhile. The movie is also mostly told from Jack's perspective but he isn't the only one allowed to speak. Honestly, for me this was a rare case where the movie was better than the book.

I read the book a few months ago. I thought it was excellent. The fact that the first person was a 5yo child made it extremely interesting and unique. Jack didn't/couldn't fully understand the circumstances so it also prevented the story from getting too graphic or disturbing.

I thought the book was great too, as is the movie. It sort of streamlined things a bit without losing anything important. The little boy who played Jack was amazing. I did however find myself wondering if he was wearing a wig or if he actually grew his hair out that long.

I loved the book and didn't realize there was a movie out.

I did not like the book at all. Normally I keep my books to add to my stash but this one I gave away.

I finally saw it. It was a tough movie for sure. The casting director gets a gold star for finding the actor to play Jack. The film would have seriously sucked if a less talented kid had the lead. With 20 minutes to go, I was a puddle on the floor, and just cried and cried.
