We got out of New Orleans on the last flight to Austin that wasn't cancelled, yesterday around noon. We've been hunkered down at home since then. The rain and winds have varied from low to high since then with no signs of letting up soon. We are much more concerned for our friends in LaGrange, Bastrop and, of course, Houston. It's ugly down there.

Despite numerous efforts from my mom, Bro1, and my SIL's dad to get information on emergency plans from Bro2 and SIL (and their two kids) in Houston, they did not return phone calls all week. Finally heard from Bro2 this morning--six inches of water in their house near Rice University, they were staying with neighbors with a raised house and a second floor, SIL's sister (one of my besties through high school) and her family were safe and dry half a mile away, but no way in or out of Bro2's neighborhood without a boat. Mom tried repeatedly to connect with Bro2 over the past week to make sure they knew that they were welcome to hunker down at Mom's or at SIL's dad's here in Austin, and spent last night worried sick about them all. Bro1 and I haven't talked yet, but I think we're both heading for a Come To Jesus talk with Bro2 about ignoring Mom and leaving us to deal with her growing anxiety. SIL's dad (longtime family doctor and friend through SIL's mom, who was a saint) is an overbearing and clueless PITA, and they don't return his calls, either--but Bro1 and I have our own families to deal with, and Bro1 sold his house and moved in with Mom when my dad died, just so we wouldn't worry so much about her living alone with her relatively minor, but increasingly apparent frailties. Honestly, returning phone calls would make a HUGE difference in her peace of mind (and our stress levels). That was really jerky of your brother, Diva. He could have at least shot you guys a text or email to let you know that they had a plan in place.

Sending good thoughts to all of our Texas Greecies and their loved ones. This storm isn't finished yet, and I hope everyone stays safe and dry.

It's 2017, you can let the world know you're safe in less than 30 seconds, to say nothing of your mother.

Harris County officials are saying that homes could remain flooded for two months. Jesus Christ.

I just can't believe the duration of this! I have friends in Katy and I put their address in my weather app. Rain for the next 10 days. 100% chance for the next four straight. It's crazy.

You were just a few minutes away! I drive through there when I come home from work and want to stop by the QFC. Up Roosevelt? I grew up 3 houses west of Roosevelt on 83rd. Wow. Was in Wedgwood recently to stuff my face at Top Pot. I'm on 88th just up the street from 30th. Top Pot has the best doughnuts! My dog's groomer is on Roosevelt.

I'm in Houston, and we have been beyond lucky. After a couple of scary days where the water came way too close to the house for comfort (within a foot of being inside), we had a several hours lull with no rain that allowed all the standing water to drain by Monday morning. It rained pretty much non-stop Monday, but the drainage was able to stay a step ahead of the rain, so no new flooding on my street and no power loss. It's 4:00 AM Tuesday and it's still raining; just checked and no water in the street.
Unfortunately many of our neighbors have not been so lucky. Starting 2 doors down (west) from us, they have gotten up to 1.5 feet in their houses (drained now), while neighbors to the east of us (and across a side street as we are on a corner), barely had standing water in the street, much less creeping up on their houses. Strange! But my immediate area is devastated and unfortunately well known for flooding in the past few years. We heard rescue air boats and helicopters all Saturday night. It's unnerving. Officials had to release water from 2 reservoirs in order not to compromise a dam that was protecting downtown & the Port of Houston. This has caused flooding in areas that typically do not flood, and these are the areas that will most likely remain flooded for months. It's just heartbreaking. And now that bastard Harvey is moving on to wreak havoc on my hometown of New Orleans.
I'm having trouble sleeping, because I have this irrational fear that I will wake up to a flooded house. On the plus side, I have lost 4 lbs since Saturday. I call it the Harvey-kins diet.

Parts of Katy were hard hit from the get-go, and now other parts are being affected by the release of reservoir water. Two former employees of mine have been devastated by this. We lived in Katy during TS Allison in 2001 & got no rain whatsoever. Go figure. I hope your friends are OK. The forecast has been tweaked just a tad and we may even seen a slice of sunshine Wednesday, but there is at least somewhat of a chance of rain for the rest of the week.

If the power goes out, I'm streaming Game of Thrones on my phone, overage charges be damned. I'm in Houston, and have everything crossed for no flooding & no power outage. I'm in Houston too and I'm just...hoping. How are you two doing?
