Christopher Nolan wrote, produced and directed this very tight complicated story about the nearly 400,000 Allied troops surrounded on the beach in Dunkirk trying to evacuate. I am not a war movie fan, but I know with Christopher Nolan at the helm, it would be an interesting movie. I had read nothing about what to expect, and I'm glad of that. It took hyper vigilance to keep on top of what was happening. Let me just say there was a little Momento and a little Inception going into the movie.
I would say to not discount this one for taking all the stuff home. I've read that it is the best war movie of all time, and is already the biggest war movie money maker of all time.
It certainly is the one movie that gives the audience credit for intelligence and doesn't spoon feed or cheapen with sentiment.
I was literally on the edge of my seat the entire movie (with my hands clasped between my knees). I don't think it's giving anything away to say the Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, and freakin' Harry Styles are in the movie, (or that I only recognized Branagh during the movie.)
I saw it at our wonderful widescreen massive old theatre that has tables and serves beer, wine, pizza and burritos with your movie (and is only $4 a ticket).

It was so good. I loved that it just focused on a single moment in time, it took me a while to get that the movie was going back and forth and showing the same thing from different perspectives. I thought Mark Rylance and the actor who played his son were fantastic. Everyone was but especially those two and my boo, Cillian Murphy.

I know what you mean about the time hopping. A bit confusing I kept thinking that more planes were arriving when in reality it was the same ones from before. Jack Lowden is my new pretend boyfriend, he was fantastic along with Tom Hardy as the spitfire pilots.

I didn't realize it was Michael Caine as the voice of one of the pilots.

There is a lot of time hopping so be prepared for that. Indeed. I didn't figure out until about halfway through that each of the three storylines were taking place in a different time frame, until then I was so very confused. And me being a dumb American I had a really hard time understanding most of the dialogue, because apparently I'm not as good with the British accents as I thought.
