I think his appeal (this is an armchair psyche guess- not from my own views as I find him gross) comes from him being so damaged. People (girls) think they can fix him.
His dad died in 9/11, and I think that gets him a lot of sympathy.

While the sympathy is understandable, I think Pete skates by getting much criticism because of how his dad died.
He always looks dirty and gross. I don't understand his general appeal to women.

Yeah track record baffles me as well. I get some of it - Kate Beckinsale baffled me for a while since she's nearly 20 years older than he is, but she's also someone who likes to dress up in a horse costume and tells a story about slipping a chocolate into her partner's buttcrack while he slept and he didn't discover it under he was at work later that day, so a comedian in his late 20s is probably exactly her speed (made clear when she moved from Pete on to one of his friends, who seems like a carbon copy of him). A teenager like Kaia Gerber makes sense, because she's too young to know better. Everyone else is baffling to me. Yes, how his dad died is sad and he can be mildly amusing, but who wants to deal with someone who looks like he lies about how often he showers and is weighed down by addiction issues?

By his own admission, he love bombs new girlfriends, so that's part of it. And he works the vulnerability angle and works it hard.
He once called out someone on the internet for saying that some female celebrity shouldn't date him because of all of his problems. He took a stand that it's wrong to declare someone undateable because they have mental health problems.
But...is it? I wouldn't want to be the girlfriend to someone in and out of rehab and threatening suicide on a regular basis. Even if he were going through a period of stability, I wouldn't get involved with him.

It's funny. I've always associated lovebombing with narcissism. I've been involved with one, so I know how that goes. The vulnerability/insecure angle is used by covert narcs. Like the one I was involved with. That's how they hook you in with their bullshit. Pete might have other mental health problems, but now you have me looking at him through another lens.

The only thing I find endearing about him is his friendship with John Mulaney, which says more about Mulaney than it does about Pete.
I believe he’s still on SNL because Lorne doesn’t want to cut him loose and have another Belushi or Farley story. (That’s actually why Pete is friends with John Mulaney, Lorne paired them up so Pete could learn from Mulaney’s past struggles.)

Reading this page of comments made me think he also love-bombed Lorne and worked the vulnerability angle to get - and keep - a role on SNL and get a mentor out of Mulaney. He is not funny. He has a funny rubber face but he himself is just not funny.

Yeah, I was going to say I find his love life less perplexing than the apparent favoritism from Lorne Michaels.
I think he can be adequately funny, I got a few laughs out of his set at the roast of Rob Lowe, but he was blown out of the water by Jimmy Carr and Nikki Glaser.

Lorne might also like the attention Pete generates for the show. Every time Pete appears in a single sketch, it's news. And when he doesn't show up, it's news too.

I think he seems like a guy with a good heart but a very messed-up brain. I wouldn't want my goddaughters to date him, but I seriously doubt he's a bad or malicious person.
