Is there such a thing as PRE traumatic stress disorder? The Derek Chauvin trial coverage is really getting to me. I became infuriated this morning when I heard that the defense is arguing that crowd distracted the officers so much they couldn’t help but kill George Floyd. That’s right! It’s the crowd that was pleading with them to get off Floyd’s neck that was the reason he died! It's especially upsetting because I think we are all expecting (based on history) that he's going to walk. One way or another, whether it's through this BS defense strategy or through slick lawyering saying he couldn't get a fair trial due to the publicity,* I fully expect him to be acquitted. And the aftermath could make the LA riots look like a picnic. *I'm certainly curious where the jury pool is being drawn from. Where on earth can you find people so cut off from the world that they'd have no prior knowledge of this case?

It’s my understanding that the jurors were asked what they knew about the case and if they felt they could be fair anyway.
If I’d been in that jury pool I would have to say, “I know what I saw. I saw a police office murder a handcuffed man.”
I feel so sorry for the witnesses being called today. I’ve seen dead people before and I’ve seen animals die but I’ve never seen a person die a violent death. I can’t imagine how helpless the witnesses felt.
And I am trying to monitor my news intake. I usually get my news from NPR and I swear they’ve had at least four updates/stories every hour. They even had a special report on what to expect from the Derek Chauvin case. I don’t need a primer!

I've had to keep the tv off since Monday.
Pre-Covid I'd work in front of the tv, but now I only do it on the days my kids are in school. I like the noise, it helps me feel like I'm in an office. The trial came on on Monday and I was right back to where I was emotionally last summer about the whole situation. Now my kids are home til Monday next week and I have to keep it off so they don't see it.
I hope that asshole rots.

I still don't understand why they had him in the car and then pulled him out?
Much of the case is in the evening for us. We watched the firefighter last night and were really impressed with her, and honestly I was a little annoyed with the judge when he admonished her when the defense was questioning her. She showed them up. They really should have avoided talking to her, because they didn't come out looking good at all.

The kids are what got me. These kids witnessed a man dying, they will be forever changed. The littlest one who said that he wouldn't let up on Floyd's neck, not even when asked nicely -- that made me cry.

I haven't watched any of it. It's spring break, so DS is home from school. Plus, I'm working a short week -- today's my last day -- so I've been fairly busy. Even if it was a more normal week, I'm not sure I could watch. What I read of the kids' testimony yesterday was heartbreaking.

They felt they didn't do enough to help, but would this trial even be happening if that video had not been seen by the world? I'm guessing this is rhetorical. If there hadn't been a video the police would have claimed it was a legitimate, non-lethal hold and the coroner would have declared that his death was due to the drugs he took.

To me it is a moot point what the 'cause of death' was. Mr. Floyd might have ultimately died of any of the other causes, but we'll never know because Officer Chauvin chose to keep his fucking knee on a man's neck for nearly 10 minutes. Had he not done that, perhaps the other factors could have been treated or mitigated or somehow addressed but WE WILL NEVER KNOW will we?

I haven't watched much of the trial, because it just seems awful. I just saw some footage of one of the witnesses testifying, and the defense lawyer kept trying to paint him as angry because he swore at the cops and called them names. But he refused to take the bait and was basically all, "Yes, I was swearing at them and calling them names. I meant it. They were killing somebody."
And I'm not sure what the defense's point was. That guy yelling at them made him kill Floyd? They were so terrified of the "angry black man" that they had to keep standing on the neck of another black man?
