I love "Here You Come Again," but "Hard Candy Christmas" is one of my all time favorites. Dolly is under appreciated as a songwriter. Several times I've told people how much I love her music and they look at me like I'm crazy. I bought a Greatest Hits CD (back in the days of CDs) and gave it to my friend and she loved it.
Dolly is an inspirational woman. I just adore her!

I was in Gatlinburg one time when I was in high school and I tried so hard to get the other people I was with the take the short drive to Pigeon Forge to visit Dollywood but no one else wanted to do it. Jerks. Dude, if I'm ever remotely in that part of the country again (passed through on a road trip as a kid), I'm going to Dollywood. Dolly was at the Hollywood Bowl on my birthday weekend a few years ago, so it was the perfect excuse to force a bunch of my friends to go with me. All of us (even those who weren't really fans before the concert) had a great time--such a wonderful show. Some guy in the audience yelled out, "I love you!", and Dolly replied, "Now, I told you to wait in the truck!" I love singing along to "Islands in the Stream". I need to find someone to karaoke that with me sometime.

And talk about being able to keep your private life private-she's been married to Carl Dean for almost 50 years!

Oh, I love Hard Candy Christmas! Especially when I hear it in a store during the holidays and look around, wondering how many other people realize it's really a show tune from a Broadway show about prostitutes whose whorehouse is getting shut down by the county...

I miss her original face. If only we'd know how she would have aged naturally. Plus the makeup. I'm sure that wouldn't go anywhere.

I love her speaking voice. I don't know why, it just makes me smile; especially when it gets real high pitched. She seems like a genuinely nice human. I don't want to know otherwise.

I wish she'd come out, if it's true that she has a decades long relationship with a woman.

Oh, I'm really enjoying all the Dolly love in this thread. What an awesome woman!
Also, I hate that more people don't know that she wrote "I Will Always Love You." Of course Whitney's version is amazing, but I'm partial to Dolly's. It's so understated and beautiful. If I'm in the right (hormonal) mood when I listen, it sometimes brings tears to my eyes.

I have to pretty much look at the 2 versions as different songs. The original (and best) is a sweet love song that could be interpreted as a romantic love song, but is even more enjoyable when it's viewed as a goodbye to a friend and mentor. Whitney made it a super power ballad song that is clearly intended to be about the end of a romantic relationship. I can appreciate both, but Dolly's song is so much the person I would like to be. Someone who knows how to express love and gratitude but isn't going to let some ridiculous feelings of loyalty, duty or obligation keep me in a situation that isn't in my best interest. That it doesn't mean that you don't care about someone if you move on. It is a beautiful message of empowerment, delivered without hurting either person. I do like the version she did with Vince Gill, which takes it more toward romantic love song. The way their voices blend is beautiful.

And I forgot to mention that, about the original song not being a romantic love song. I really like what you said about it, and I totally agree.
