The J.K Rowling thread has been off topic for several pages. Trans issues have completly taken over the thread. Perhaps we need a LGBTQ thread where that discussion can take place.

Oh crikey, we completely missed the Emmy Awards! Mea culpa...we'll remember the next big awards show.
And yes to an LGBTQ thread. Thanks for the nudge.

I really thought a long time about whether or not to write this post. This place has meant so much to me for 15 years. 15 YEARS!! I hope it’s ok that I use this thread to first of all thank ALL the mods past and present, ALL Greecies I’ve ever talked to, laughed and cried with, and poked fun with at celebs. The guidelines on here were always simple:
The past two years I noticed that these don’t work anymore on CPMCoG. The internet isn’t the same place it was 15 years ago. You all know that. The first thing any forum’s guidlines should say is: We don’t accept any form of discrimination, racism, sexism, homophobia etc. But....that’s not the most important guidline on here and I wonder why. You’re protecting users who, while playing by the rules, can freely express harmful opinions and be openly racist and, like lately, transphobic. Because they don’t snipe at others, it’s totally ok what they say because „respect the differing opinions that exist here when vicing your own“. Sure. But if the tone is more important than what is being said, things happen like what we’ve seen happen in Meghan Markle’s thread and many others in the past few years. This is not freedom of speech, it’s freedom of consequence you’re offering. It seems to be more important to allow a superficial „principle of common courtesy“ than, as a forum, to openly stand against any hate speech, as nicely as it may be concealed. This board has failed to do that and thus, many Greecies who are people of color have basically fled this place. Certain users run the forum now because they know how to get across racist or transphobic opinions without getting warned, because they’re not attacking any Greecies directly, and who cares about those who just read and might not even feel safe to post?? And if any of those who finally can’t take it anymore and do snap, THAT is what getting warned, not the harmful opinion of a user who knows how to play nicely.
I refuse to believe that the mods on here can’t identify racism or homophobia. But I wonder why they don’t speak out against it. Remember how on Fametracker and Twop people got warnings and bans because they used wrong grammar, but others who were complete idiots were fine because they didn’t break those rules?? This is where CPMCoG is right now. I’m happy for everyone who still feels safe and welcomed here. And I realize that in the eyes of the mods this post looks like „Oh, she’s mad because someone had a different opinion than her“. Yeah, no. Racism and homophobia/transphobia aren’t opinions. THOSE should be bannable offenses.
You can also show respect to your fellow Greecies by not allowing harmful posts that offend entire groups of people. Obviously, moderating forums in that way requires a lot more work and maybe I’m being naive here. It’s easier to warn someone’s very obviousy sniping comment against a user than warning someone because of their „opinion“ that might hurt others. I know this place isn’t for me anymore as you will all agree. It was fun and I loved it, but curating your online experience is also something I’ve learned in recent years. It just takes one click to get away from things that hurt me, I realize that. I guess it’s just more painful when it happens in a place I used to spend a lot of time at.

I don't quite understand what's happened, but I'm sorry to see you leave.
We don't censor people's opinions here. We are not the thought police. Regardless of whether we agree with someone's point of view, observation, interpretation, ideology or whatnot, we do not stifle critical thought or expression. As long as someone is not disrespecting other Greecies or disrupting the board, we have no reason to intervene.
Moderating a forum like this is a thankless job sometimes, and we aren't going to please everyone. However, I have personally sacrificed a great deal of my own time to ensure this board continues as a welcoming piece of the internet where people know they will find a respectful community.
If you no longer feel respected because of the opinions of others here, that's up to you. Moderators are here to ensure that everyone's behavior while on our forum remains respectful of others. That is a big and important difference.
I wish you luck in whatever board you now join, and I hope your comparison shopping illuminates the many reasons why this forum is still going strong after more than 15 years online. That is no random accident.

Maybe keeping an eye on the Politics thread might be a good idea? It's barely over 300 pages but you-know-what is three days away. Maybe a new thread might be a good idea in advance vs. after?
