I understand why she didn't speak out. Yet, I can't help but wonder what would have happened if she had told Sammy, and Sammy had told Frank Sinatra. My guess is Sammy Davis Jr and Frank Sinatra also raped people. Back in the Rat Pack heyday, it wouldn't even have been considered rape, barely legally and certainly not culturally. It's easy to forget how recent it is that rape was something other than a stranger overpowering a virgin in a dark alley. After all, if a woman didn't want to be raped, what was she doing seeing a man alone and drinking? Besides, at this point, I'm shocked when a celebrity isn't a rapist.

Still, I can easily see Sammy Davis Jr would have considered it an insult to his honor or something if another man raped his gf. It's not hard for me to picture Davis Jr telling his pal Sinatra about how Bill Cosby "disrespected" him and Sinatra telling his buddy, "Hey don't worry about it! I'll take care of it!"

It makes me appreciate Robert Downey Jr so much more. Everybody has demons but forcing themselves to confront them, own them, and humbly rebuild their career is so much better than a manipulative boor using his money and status to squelch the horrible things they did while in their "right" mind. There's not going to be any forgiveness for Bill Cosby nor any sort of bullshit mea culpa that anyone will buy and I'll take that as a consolation since he won't do jail time. Money is losing it's ability to keep things quiet and I can't imagine a better tainted legacy for The Cos to leave.

I was talking to a neighbor of mine, a very liberal (white) upper class woman who is probably in her late 70s, early 80s. I don't know what started the conversation, but she started talking about how she feels sorry for Bill Cosby. I asked her how she could think that many women would be lying, and she said she was sure these women were lying. I asked her why she thought they would lie and she just shrugged and said she didn't know, maybe to get famous or something.
I'm usually the last one to buy into these types of things, and I am shocked that there are people that still completely dismiss any possibility of this being true. So I guess he still has supporters out there.

So much for the theory that the (white) media is going to town with reporting these stories in an effort to bring Bill Cosby (a successful black man) down.

I was listening to a podcast the other day (Sklar Brothers, I think) and someone said, even if 90% of the allegations are made up, that still leaves a handful of really messed up accusations.

I asked her why she thought they would lie and she just shrugged and said she didn't know, maybe to get famous or something. So much for the theory that the (white) media is going to town with reporting these stories in an effort to bring Bill Cosby (a successful black man) down. I haven't seen that alleged at all. Most of the commentary on the subject I've seen that supports Bill Cosby is from the conservative media, where it's, "Bill Cosby dared to speak the truth about young black men, out of wedlock babies, and wearing your pants low. So obviously the Soros-backed thugs in the liberal media had to attack Bill Cosby with outrageous lies, let Bill Cosby's example encourage other black people to 'leave the plantation' [yes, they use those words], and vote GOP." Leave aside all the reasons that's stupid - that's the general idea. As for the black media, most of what I've seen is acknowledging that the stories are true. And much of THAT does take the Dyson/Buress tack - "fuck Bill Cosby for being smug. He's a hypocrite." (Which again, who gives a shit?). Because Hannibal Buress was right about one thing. EVERYBODY knew. Googling Bill Cosby rape at any time in the last 10 years would have produced tons of results, including details of a civil proceeding. I think most of the reaction in the black media is informed by the fact that they knew. How could they not? Cosby went after famous people in addition to unknowns. What are the odds Beverly Johnson, Janice Dickinson, Kathy Lee Gifford and whoever else never talked? All the (white) racists were probably hoping for some big left-leaning falling-out as the credulous white media supported a black rapist because of affirmative action. Instead, they're shutting Cosby out. And I agree with the general consensus of this thread. His career is basically done. Maybe the occassional talk show appearance, a few non-fiction books or lectures, maybe another standup special with a few tour dates that's released quitely, and eventually The Cosby Show will probably start being rerun again. And lots of accolades when he dies. But nothing new, no more awards. No more elder statesman role. (Also, the cynical part of me is assuming the Cosby image team is combing through the accusation looking for ONE that's exaggerated or embellished in any way. They they go after that woman as a liar and hope everyone just quietly assumes the other dozens of women were lying as well).

The count of women coming forward is about 40 right now, isn't it?
What was that other news story where someone asked the question how many women does it take to be believed over one guy?
