I can't believe it has taken me this long to watch On The Waterfront but well, well, well! Best. Kiss. Ever.
Did Brando have makeup on his eyelids to look more like a boxer?

I just saw A Streetcar Named Desire for the first time, and it was an amazing film.

Heh. I saw his thread near the top and thought, "Oh my gosh, did he die?" Then I realized, duh, yeah, about two years ago. Duh.
When I was 13 I rented A Streetcar named Desire and immediately began lusting over him. He was a stud! Then I considered that he was an old man in real life. Didn't stop the lust, but I felt slightly weird about it.
I still haven't seen On the Waterfront.

I have absolutely no idea how James Dean got the 'talented heart throb of the 50's' slot in pop culture, when Academy Award winning Brando's walking around in muscle tees in Streetcar Named Desire.

He is the sex. I have absolutely no idea how James Dean got the 'talented heart throb of the 50's' slot in pop culture, when Academy Award winning Brando's walking around in muscle tees in Streetcar Named Desire. I don't think they really hold the same place in pop culture. Dean was only in movies in the 1950s, while Brando went on to be the Godfather, Dr. Moreau and a jaded recluse who turned his back on Hollywood, so the film/culture historians can discuss him in several different contexts. It's harder to look at Brando from his Streetcar days without thinking of what he became later in life. Dean is forever an early forbearer of cool and an icon of alienated/disaffected youth. Since he died young, there's the feeling of loss about what might have been, and that helps with building a legend. Even in his lifetime, I would guess that Dean had stronger appeal with teenagers than Brando, because he was younger and his movie roles/image probably resonated more strongly with them, and it's young women who drive the heartthrob business. Brando was considered good looking but he was a little subversive to be wholly embraced by the mainstream. It's not as if Brando's talent was ever ignored--he was nominated for Best Actor four years in a row in the 1950s. He is still credited with shaping the direction of male acting for his generation and the ones that followed, with Dean being one of the very first disciples. Brando makes an appearance of sorts in the newest Superman movie.

Why the pig latin?
He was so beautiful and so good at what he did. I watched 'steetcar' in a class of 7 females and one male, and he reports the looking around all of us were just staring open-mouthed at the pretty, and I believe him.
Man, I need to see more of his stuff.

I remember watching Streetcar at my (all-girls, Catholic) school as well, Olenska. Our teacher put the video on play and left the room. When Stanley showed up in his t-shirt and insolently stared at Blanche, 20 jaws simeltaneously dropped and the gushing commenced. The funny thing is, I remember in that scene Blanche gets frightened by a cat and Stanley laughs at her and meows, we went nuts, laughing and hooting and rewinding the tape. Then the teacher returned and shouted at us. Good times, good times.

Here's what is interesting about Brando: Superman Returns director Bryan Singer thought so highly of his performance as Jor-El in the 1978 Superman film that he included his soliloquy to his son in the current film and gave him a credit.
In other words, Brando's making money from the grave.
