Yeah, Joss had a chance for a new Joss show: Firefly. Apparently Fox was desperate to get something out of him while he was still doing Buffy/Angel, so they asked if he had any ideas and he said "Sure, I have this space western..." But we all know how that turned out. Unfortunately (for the fans), I'm not so sure he'll get a third chance (if you count Serenity as a second chance).
And the sense of entitlement from the fans bugs, too. Some of them are as bad as JKR/Harry Potter Fans (omg because Harry/Hermione is officially NOT CANON NOW I am shutting down my website, goodbye cruel internet!!!omg!). Some people are very upset by Wash's death (the DVD's been out for a month now, I can say that, right?) and are NEVER SPEAKING TO JOSS AGAIN or are not fans anymore or feel SO BETRAYED or some such. Seriously. Joss created them, he's allowed to kill them off, and you have no say in the matter. Too bad!

I guess I missed something, did Serenity do horrible at the box office? I never watched any Joss Whedon shows, but ended up seeing Serenity because we arrived too late to see the Corpse Bride. Have to say, I LOVED the movie, and now just watched the Firefly series On Demand and loved those as well. Makes me sad that I will never see these characters again, I even wasted a few (work) hours yesterday reading Firefly Fan Fic!

I'm a huuuuuge Firefly and Joss fan, but even I will admit that some of the fan reaction to Wash's death was absolutely ridiculous. All the bitching and moaning about 'killing' their favorite character for no good reason, when they failed to realize that killing him for no good reason was the whole point. Death happens to everyone eventually, not just supporting characters you only kinda-like, and you don't always get a big emotional speech to say goodbye to everyone. I liked Wash a lot but it was a very gutsy and, IMO, effective move to kill him.
But this is not the Serenity thread, so: I always have thought, from interviews I've read and commentaries I've heard, that Joss is a very nice, humble, witty guy. However, my experience with any of his fandom online is limited to the Firefly thread at TWoP. I'm sure there are much more annoyingly-fanatic people out there that I've just been lucky enough to not come across. It's too bad that Joss himself gets most of the negative reaction, when it seems to be mostly the uber-fans that are annoying and pretentious.

Laconicchic, TRUE fans of Joss know that no one is safe from a horrible, painful and sudden death in his shows! He killed Buffy's Mom!
And Millis, Firefly fanfic? What 'ship are we talking? Mal/Inera, Mal/Kaylee, Mal/Jayne, Mal/Simon/Jayne....

The series I read ( here's the first part) had your typical pairings (mal/inara, kaylee/simon), PG13, nothing crazy! And it appeared to take place at the end of the series but before the movie.

This is so funny, because it's true (about the more fanatical HP fans and Whedon fans). The other day, inspired by this thread, I Googled Whedon and found some Browncoat's tearful testimonial against Whedon's "betrayal" in killing off Wash, and the fan had the gall to demand a response, saying that Whedon "owed" the fans. Now, I don't think that killing a character to show the "senselessness" of death is all that original, especially since Whedon did it about a million times (or so) in his t.v. series, such that it really lost its impact (for me, at least). But c'mon, people!

May I ask a question? And feel free to heap LOADS of scorn upon me for asking.... ;D
WTF is a "Browncoat"?
Is it like a "brownnose"? I know what that is.

Heh, I'll give you a scorn-free response:
On Firefly, the Independents (the side Mal and Zoe were fighting on) all wore brown coats. Because of this, the Independents got nicknamed (oh-so-cleverly)Browncoats. Mal still wears his, which is how people could tell in the first few episodes that he fought for the Independents.
In fandom, fans of the show adopted the name for themselves, as they thought their plight was a lot like Mal's. The whole "losing-side-not-sure-it-was-the-wrong-one" deal.
I think that's the jist of it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
