That is so sad. He wasn't even that old! Of course, this means my boyfriend's hippie parents and I are going to have to exclusively play Pink Floyd music for the next week to mourn his passing. He will be sorely missed in an age where music just isn't what it used to be...(YMMV, of course)

Bumping this up to declare that I think I may be in love with David Gilmour. I know he's puffy. I know he's older than my father. I don't care. I saw the Pink Floyd Pulse concert on tv last night, and it blew my mind. "Wish You Were Here" actually made me cry, and his guitar solo during "Comfortably Numb" made me want to write him a long love letter.
Wish they would have played something from Piper at the Gates of Dawn, but otherwise it was fantastic.

Oh, "Wish You Were Here" at Live 8 last summer KILLED ME. I was as weepy as two weepy things. And David Gilmour is hot. He's a big wall of guitar-playing manliness.

You actually saw Pink Floyd? *dies of jealousy* *resurrects self and dies again*
Seriously, "Wish You Were Here" is my favorite Floyd song. I love the way the two guitar parts intertwine at the begining, it just hits something very primal in me. It was really weird to watch the songs being played and coming from actual human beings, because for so long in my mind the music just existed as some sort of cosmic force, so it was really cool to see that no, actual people make this music.
And yes! "a big wall of guitar-playing manliness". That's exactly what he is. Thank you for making me not so embarassed about my crush on David Gilmour.

Naw, I just watched it on tv, but they were still the highlight. I think Dave looks really cool with no hair, too. He's so big and broad that the bald head works on him. Watching them play last summer was a little funny too because Dave looked like he could easily squish Roger Waters like a little bug.

I watched the Live 8 performance on the AOL webcast and it was great, better than I expected after seeing chunks of both their '87 and '94 tours on Vh1 Classic. When it comes to live spark/jamming/stage presence, Pulse-era Floyd is maybe 1/2 a step above the Eagles, and that's probably just because of the perdy lights...*snore*

Actually, I take back being embarrassed about the David Gilmour thing. Damn, he was smokin' back in the day. Almost looks like Johnathan Rhys-Meyers in that pic. TacoFlavored, I haven't seen anything else live that they've done, but I was floored by this one. Maybe they got their spark back after taking such a long hiatus. I doubt they'll ever tour again, but I'd consider selling one of my eggs to get tickets. Then again, since I'm not going to have kids, I consider selling my eggs for a lot of things. Still, this one would be pretty worthwhile.

He does look like Rhys-Meyers.
My gym's satellite station played "The Wall" in its entirety the other day. Not really workout music but I was still jammin. What I like about "Wish You Were Here" is that it starts out one way- almost Rod Stewartesque. But then they take it into a completely different direction. Love the Floyd.
