I'm just sitting here listening to some of her music and watching some of her videos and I don't think any of these R&B chicks hold a candle to her. I loved, loved, loved her dancing. She was just so smooth and effortless with it. And she was incredibly beautiful too. I can't believe this August it will be five years since she died. It seems like just yesteday when I found out the news...

I loved her version of "Journey to the Past", from the animated movie, Anastasia.

For real, I never realized how talented and charismatic she was until this onslaught of wannabees to her throne came along(yes Ashanti and Ciara, I am looking straight at you).

I thought she rocked Queen Of The Damned. It was a part that was over her head, but she worked it as best as she could. I heard a lot of high-end actress names considered for the part of Akasha, so when she was chosen she seemed an odd choice. But still she did well.
Now marrying R.Kelly, that really seemed like a WTF thing to do...

She died on my birthday of all days.
For the rest, dunno. Never considered her to be great, then again she wasn't really popular on this side of the pond and I wasn't a fan of hers. At least from what I remember she didn't present herself as a wannabe slag, so that's a good thing I guess.

Ah, the Aaliyah Syndrome - when a moderately talented singer/"actress" is elevated to superstar status because of sudden death. I liked Aaliyah - never loved her, never even paid attention, but could appreciate the classy image she set for young women of color. But boy howdy, ask her fan base and you'd think the girl would've become president had she just made it to 35. Suddenly, she's the world best dancer, the world's greatest singer, most talented actress...but when she was alive, she was a mere B-lister with questionable theaterical talent. The fandom's whole plan to boycott "Matrix" was just ridiculous. (And the vitriol they had towards her replacement was just baffling.) To this DAY, her fan base is scary as hell. Reminds me of Jesus, in a way. Love the Lord, hate his fan club.

All I know is that when I'm working out and my shuffle list plays her, I run a little faster.
And Penny Woods, you just made my new favorite sentence. "Love the Lord, hate his fan club". I will attempt to use that twice today.

I was thinking about her recently because I heard one of her songs and it reminded me of something Uncle Bob said on his blog: 9/11 basically trumped the news of her death, which was making headlines before that. It's true, because I remember in the days right before 9/11 posting about her on Hissyfit and then suddenly, everything else seemed trivial.
