From this week's popbitch so take its reliability as hearsay... Mary-Kate Olsen's appearance is starting to concern New York onlookers. The Twins recently attended a Counting Crows show at a club, where M-K appeared to be in a complete trance. At several points she seemed to collapse, and need her huge security guard to scoop her up. Other club goers reported that Mary-Kate is skeletal, with terrible skin, and her eyes rolling back a lot. Hmmn, let's hope she hasn't picked up a fondness for a whole new set of drugs since she got out of rehab... Is it sad that when I read this, I immediately thought back to that episode of Full House where DJ and Stephanie had tickets to a Counting Crows concert, and Michelle wanted to go only because she felt left out?

You guys correct me if I'm wrong, but the paps didn't follow them much prior to their turning 18, did they? Is there some kind of law about following underage stars for candid photographs?
If the paps didn't follow MKA much prior to their birthdays/release of New York Minute, then I can see why MK thought she could go to New York and have a pretty normal life.

I hate to confess this, but I actually found their movie It Takes Two with Steve Guttenberg and Kirstie Alley (blech, another clam!) to be kind of cute. I thought it would be stupid, but it was more like The Parent Trap. (The original, that is-I never saw the remake).

If liking It Takes Two is wrong, than I don't want to be right! That was the first movie I saw multiple times in theatres and to this day I actually think it's an actual good movie - maybe it's the nostalgic factor, but It Takes Two is always good for a rainy day or something.

My take on these two (especially MK) is that they're indulging in some good old-fashioned self-destructive behaviour. Not that it surprises me, given the rarified environment in which they grew up. I'm also not blaming them entirely - I mean, technically they're adults and responsible for their own actions, but at the same time, who hasn't been self-destructive? Who hasn't tried to mask pain with the very thing that started it in the first place? Drugs, alcohol, overeating, undereating etc. - most people have crutches - it just gets into dangerous territory when the crutch becomes physically harmful and/or the person becomes too dependent on it.
I hear the arguments re: why NYC is a good place to be, but it does seem as if there's some kind of crisis level that's either been reached or is rapidly approaching - she/they/her family and friends need to prioritize. You can't be a fashion plate/photographer/clothing designer etc. if you're dead or in a thingee all the time

Moldy Tofu, I totally agree with you. I don't think they're bad people at all. I'd like to see anyone go through childhoods and teen years unscathed. They're just like all the rest of us - subject to problems.

The paps didn't follow them so much, but I recall the whole entire internet being obsessed with the Twins turning 18 (13-July-04). There were tons of sites with counters that counted down the days until they turned 'legal'. Barf.
I think the media frenzy around them started somewhere in 2004, perhaps during their induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame ( 30th April, 2004) where MK wore the infamous back-less light purple dress that showed her emanciated figure.
So, they were in the public's eye at age 17, but it really picked up after they turned 18.
ETA: I am not aware of any laws protecting the underage from being photographed in public without permission, but I would guess that there isn't, since we've seen photos of Apple, Madonna's kids, etc.

I agree w the person who said that if they truly wanted out of the public eye they'd have attended school somewhere less obvious than NYC (and post 9/11 NYC at that!). Let's not forget, these two have been traveling the world professionally since they were very young kids so the idea of them going to school in Scotland or anywhere else abroad shouldn't be scary. Plus, you know that wherever they choose to go they're gonna be surrounded by their bodyguards, PR ppl, assistants, etc., so it's not like they would have been cast out to some remote place entirely alone.
There are PLENTY of fine schools they could have chosen here in the US as well as over in Europe/Australia. They could have/should have found some nice out-of-the-way yet trendy and fun place to study and earn their degree and then if they wanted to further their education or pursue a career such as photography or whatever THEN moved to NYC.
The problem is that they have been adored little creatures in the public eye their ENTIRE lives and probably can't live w/out some sense of media attention/adoration. It's unfortunate that, now that their careers are basically over, the only attention their getting is negative. How typical of the child actor who can't move on from his/her glory days in the spotlight.

I don't know. I think there's got to be an element of this is the school I want to attend, all my friends are there and I'm not going to let the paps choose how I lead my life. Which is fair enough. I don't follow them extensively but they don't seem to be burning up the red carpet events. I've really only seen pictures of them when they're out and about recently, which might be an annoying but acceptable level of harassment for them.

What's so funny about this to me was that there was such ardent fascination with the twins turning 18 and then now they're 18 and you hear nothing of them being "sex symbols", and rightfully so. They have all of the sex appeal of 10-year-old boys (so maybe CEMJ is hot for them then, who knows?). I think it was just the novelty of it all that got everyone all enamored with the "Olsen 18 Countdown". It was so annoying and unjustified that I was very glad when they finally became "legal".
