I heard Bowie and he had a falling out at one point that was so bad, Bowie beat the crap out of him at a club they both showed up in. I think they are friendly now, but I remember reading it was due to Reed being a asshat and talking smack about Bowie after they collaborated.

Nico said Lou was "sweet"? Man...I had always heard they had a real anomosity towards each other. Or at least he did towards her. I'm sure their relationship was more complex than what I've read (and been told), but that surprises me. I think I'll have to check out that book, chiqui.
And yeah, there's that whole 'wife-beater' thing that will always like him less than I think I would otherwise.

But still...great songwriter. I don't think I'd like to know him personally, but you can't deny that the Velvets were a revolutionary band.

Yeah he seems like a really nasty piece of work generally, but pretty cool when he wants to be.

Like twenty years ago Howard Stern was yelling at him through a megaphone at the Grammies red carpet. That still cracks me up.
