I remember Victoria Jackson talking about how excited Nirvana was when Weird Al asked if he could parody them. It was a sign to them that they'd hit the big time. Maybe this was in his Behind the Music? I also Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers being really dickish about their parody, which was disappointing to me.

Mark Knopfler's only condition on allowing Al to parody Dire Straits' Money for Nothing was that Dire Straits got to play on the parody as well--Al was thrilled and so were Knopfler and his bandmates. It really is a sign that You Have Arrived...

And the thing is, his parodies are all humorous and entertaining, not derogatory at all, and in the case of Word Crimes, educational! Artists should not have any reason to worry about him parodying their songs.

Artists should not have any reason to worry about him parodying their songs. His parodies do occasionally poke a little fun at the original artist, and if they have a sense of humor about themselves they won't be dicks about it. Like with the Nirvana one, Kurt apparently was concerned that it was going to be about food and Al told him it was going to be about how no one can understand his lyrics. And Kurt still went with it. If even Kurt Cobain could roll with a little mockery aimed his way I don't know what Prince's deal is.

I love Prince's work, but he can't even let fans enjoy his music. "What? You recorded me singing at a concert? Don't you dare post that on YouTube!"
I'm not the least bit surprised that he won't let Al record his songs. He's got the sense of humor (Prince), but wants to keep it only in his court. He's a very unique guy.
Here's hoping that Al is for a Super Bowl event and the NFL gods embrace it and make it so!

I want to see a whole stadium of people singing the Sports Song's "We're Great and You Suck!" by a million voices, hopefully with a scrolling sing-a-long mega screen. That would rock.

Always a staple. Second concert I ever went to. I lived in ALASKA, then, and I had to sit in nosebleed seats. He was LATE, too. Man, he put on a fun show, though.

I usually like Weird Al's songs, but that one made me cringe.
