Love. Him. It's ridiculous how so many of the best scenes i've ever seen on TV/film where i rewind it on the screen or in my head feature him as the key player.
1. The bit where he is betrayed by his bitch mistress in Elizabeth, making love to her, the guards busting in, the commanding way he says 'I must do nothing by your orders. I am Norfolk'. Oh. My. God. So heartbreakingly sexy. And then the restrained realisation as he looks at his mistress who betrayed him, standing still while the guards tie his hands, yet still looking more powerful than them all, his exchange with Geoffrey Rush 'I think Walsingham, that a man's courage is in the manner of his death. I am prepared to die for my beliefs. So cut off my head. And make me a martyr. The people will always remember it'. The BEST scene in a very good movie.
2. His death scene in Cracker. Speaking over the radio and giving death bed determined evidence against his killer as he lies bleeding in the dingy street. The barely discernible and poignantly choked irrational last thought not so much spoken but BREATHED out 'Catriona. Oh God Catriona. What will i tell her?' The image of Penhaligon's quavery 'sir?' as she comes across the body and her childish sobs. I always shipped those two and thought they had so much chemistry. Best scene from every single epside of this cracking series. (Well ok possibly rivaled by Fitz before he goes into the house where the stutterer is holding the blind sister hostage and also when once the house is about to blow and Penhaligon's like 'ruuuuunn you fat bastard run!' Heh.)
3. His final scene in Dr Who. I don't even watch the damn series, yet i saw a clip of this and without knowing anything about the characters or context i could still see what an amazing scene it was; 'You were fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. And do you know what? [Blinding grin] So was I'.
4. Some series i don't know the name of when i caught a clip of him standing in a pub stage (?) reciting poetry. Every line had 'fucking' in it, but it was still a great peom, something like 'the fucking shit was fuckign brown' - anyone know where this is from?
The man hasn't put one step wrong in his career - every single thing on his CV is something he can be utterly proud of. There aren't even many so-called A-listers you can say that about. I do wish he'd do something incredibly high profile though just so he seemed more accessible.
There isn't much info going on his personal life. He's 41 never married and apparently recently broken up with Siwan Morris, but can't get any more info than that.
