I think he lucked out on three good acting roles (in My So-Called Life, Requiem for a Dream, and Dallas Buyers Club) and he’s JUST not a good actor. Say what you will about Daniel Day-Lewis and his intense acting preparations, Day-Lewis has never mailed dead rats and used condoms to his co-stars! Hell, Jared probably committed a crime by mailing materials that are biohazards! His Joker sucked in Suicide Squad, I didn’t like his performance in Blade Runner 2049, his performance in House of Gucci deserved a Razzie nomination AND win for Worst Supporting Actor, and Morbius also looks terrible. Also, his band has some strong cult vibes. So, I guess this could double as a Stars I Hate post!

He's always grossed me out and he nearly ruined Blade Runner 2049 for me.

He's always grossed me out and he nearly ruined Blade Runner 2049 for me. Ana de Armas’ performance as Joi also didn’t help. Pretty, but she CANNOT act! Thanks for the compliment, mementomori!

I felt some of her scenes went on too long. But I fast forward through all of his. It's Blade Runner, dude. You don't have to be the center of attention!

Yeah, the unpleasantness of the various rumours and stories about his behaviour certainly don't help, but IMO he's just also not super convincing in many roles. He was good in Dallas, but I thought MM had the more complex task and really carried that thing, no matter that it was the typical Oscar bait stuff to some degree. And he was good in Requiem for a Dream. His Joker is terrible, as is whatever he does in Blade Runner (solid movie otherwise) and I'm in the camp who thought he was terrible in Gucci and deserved that Razzie. It was an uneven and silly movie, but reasonably entertaining and everyone else actually played with each other and tried to lift the material somewhat. And then there was Leto screaming "Look at me!!! Look at meee!!!" in every scene he was in and disrupting everything.
To compare it to DDL, I think he's a great actor deserving of his accolades. But particularly in his younger years he sounds exhausting to be around (but yeah, there are no stories of him deliberately accosting his colleagues and taking his method as an excuse to be an asshole on and off the set in the way Leto seems to be doing). At the same time, DDL always seems to know which movie he is in and what he must do in order to carry that movie. Last of the Mohicans is a music video, basically, and he plays classic leading man beats and doesn't get bogged down by too much psychological complexity because it's not that kind of film. He's quieter in Age of Innocence, louder in Gangs of New York or There Will Be Blood. He overwhelms everything when it is appropriate for the character like with Bill the Butcher (still my fave performance and I still say that he marred his chances for an Oscar by making it funny and not a classic villain, but it was right for the film). He was warm and inclusive in Lincoln, letting everyone around him shine as well, because that was the character. And even with bad films that don't quite work, he's always doing his best. That movie with Camilla Belle is the best I have ever seen her act and it's because he helped her and lifted her up with his performance. Or Nine, where he was totally miscast, but kicked at the material so long until he could somehow make it work for himself (not unlike Kidman this year in Being the Ricardos).
LOL, all of that is to say: Leto seems super toxic on set and allegedly also otherwise and the results on screen are usualy meh. But there's a train of thought that as long as you do THE MOST acting, that is somehow impressive and I believe he has benefited from this wrong-headed notion within the industry.

technicolor, I acknowledge that DD-L could be a possible irritant on the set, but I have no doubt that he’s probably much more low-key, self-aware, humble, and humorous in real life. Jared Leto seems like to me it would be the guy who definitely wants to impress you with his band or show you his Oscar and definitely would be “on” if you met him. All of this BS for this bad movie?!?
