I know there are some comedy fans on these boards, so thought I'd pass along today's internet rumor that Richard Jeni has taken his own life. Here's a quote from Shecky Magazine:

The word on the street, confirmed by us, via more than one party close to the deceased, is that Richard Jeni has chosen to end his life. His website contains only the words "richardjeni.com" in grey letters on a black background, and it's not a hyperlink.

It is said that he chose to do so because of seemingly intractable medical problems, the nature of which we are not privy to.

We will offer further information as it becomes available.

Didn't Mitch Hedberg die around this time of year too? March is a bad month for good comedians. They should be required to spend it in a safe place getting lots of hugs and prozac.

I saw Richard Jeni perform a few times and I thought he was great. If this is true, I'm actually kind of shocked. With guys like Belushi and Mitch Hedberg, you sort of see it coming, but Richard Jeni?!

I'm gonna pretend it's just a stupid joke and that's why the wires haven't picked up the story yet. Nanana *fingers in ears* I can't hear you.

Damn. I've been googling and it seems as though he is, or was, in the middle of a national tour. According to this article, he pulled out of a gig in Chicago at the last minute this weekend.

If this turns out to be fake somehow, I'll be glad but I want to sue for damages. I just spilled coffee on my sweater while googling and that's gonna stain. What? These kinds of rumors are malicious and they should be punished.. by buying me sweaters.

On a serious note, it took a few days for the papers to pick up the story when Hedberg OD'd, so I really hope he's OK, but I'm worried.

Whoa. Usually when an obscure thread pops up, I immediately think "dead" or "scandal" (See the Ioan Gruffudd thread for an illustration of the second). But this still shocked me. Has there been conformation from a major media source?
