Shades of Phil Hartman? What a sad story.

They are reporting that his death is "under investigation " because they are questioning the girlfriend that made the call when he shot himself . I guess they want to rule her out as the shooter? They put the "suicide" thing on hold for now . Who knows ? Every unnatural death is first assumed to be a homicide and is investigated as such. Police must rule out homicide before they declare a suicide. You could be dangling from a noose, in the middle of an empty forest, with a suicide note pinned to your chest, and a single set of footprints leading to your corpse and it would still be investigated as a homicide.

They'd be irresponsible not to investigate just to make sure it was a suicide. If they took everyone's word you could shoot anyone you want in the face and say it was suicide when the cops arrived.

Or shades of Elliot Smith, who officially stabbed himself during a fight with his girlfriend, but there was some suspicion about how it happened.

Whoa. This kind of came out of nowhere. I'm so sorry for his family/friends if it's true.

OT, but there is speculation that Elliot Smith didn't kill himself?

What a shame. I'd always liked his comedy specials, especially his "Kermit the Priest" routine. According to him, that was what most dull priests sounded like. "Looord..." And his impression of what a good priest should sound like...some Italian goodfella who can sum things up easily. "Kid gets born of a virgin, that's Christmas, we get presents. Skip ahead...then the Romans whack him, that's Easter, we get candy."
He was supposed to play a local theater on the night of Good Friday. While visiting my parents yesterday for Sunday dinner, I asked my mother if she'd like to go with me.
This morning she calls me up while I'm getting ready for work. "I don't think I'll be going to see Richard Jeni with you..."
Such a shame. Condolences to his family and friends.

The world will have a lot less funny in it now. R.I.P.

RIP Richard, I hope you've found the peace you were looking for. Here's the piece missjennifer was referring to. Comic genius.
