I One of my all-time Fraiser moments was this opening scene that DHP did by himself of Niles ironing his pants, and he keeps knocking stuff over and other assorted pratfall-type stuff and somewhere along the way he cuts his finger and keeps fainting at the sight of the blood. It was just a great example of physical comedy. I love that scene. Doesn't he end up setting the pants and then Frasier's couch on fire? But he can't put it out because he keeps looking at his finger and fainting.

Yep. Here it is.My favorite part is the bit where he remembers that he shouldn't run with scissors.

He was the best thing about Frasier, but I always assumed he was out of the closet. I think he was, but he just never felt like making a big public announcement. I think it's sad that people still feel the NEED to make an annoucement that they're gay, like it's a huge deal. I long for the day when people finally are able to just say, "Meh, so what?" when people officially "come out"-and consider it just common place. Oh, and I adored him in Down with Love.

Oh no, Wol. That bus doesn't lead to Hell. It just leads to the Isle of Cynical Biotches And I'm on the side of "I thought he was already out". Maybe it's just because so many folks just kind of talked about his gayness so matter of factly, I hadn't realized he'd never made a public announcement of the fact.

That opening scene is the best thing anybody ever did on Frasier. I agree, Guinastasia. I am saddened by the fact that a person's sexual orientation is so important to some people. I couldn't care less. What people do in their private lives is private unless it's truly illegal or injurious to others. I don't want to see anybody, hetero or otherwise, snogging (or worse) on each other in public. Get a room, people!

DHP was definitely NOT out before this. Or rather, he was out to his friends/family, but not to the public. His "I'm not reading you my open book" line was nothing more than a way of refusing to admit publicly that he's gay. Ditto Jodie Foster and Anderson Cooper.
I don't have a problem with him having been in the closet. If he had come out during Frasier, it would have been a huge deal in the media, and why should he have to deal with that? Coming out now, when he's not that famous anymore, means it will be a little blurb and that's it. It's still more attention than it deserves, but it's not like he's going to be hounded.

Oh, and I adored him in Down with Love. He was the best thing about that film! I love his reaction when he gets slapped and told, "You're just like every other man!" Absolutely perfect. ;D

John Mahoney lives in Chicago. The last few years when he's mentioned being out and about at various functions, columnists will mention he was with his partner, whatever his name is. I thought he was out.
