My favorite rationale has been the people saying it would be like having Anne Hathaway play Tiana in a live action remake of Princess and the Frog. Yeah, because any scrappy white girl can be plopped into 1920's New Orleans and struggle to open a restaurant making soul food. A black girl playing a singing fish is equivalent to white washing Mulan, Pocahontas, or any ethnic specific story-line. I also don't remember them being all that mad about Sebastian invading those pure Danish waters with his Caribbean patois.

A few days before the news came out with this casting decision, there was a news story about Melissa McCarthy being considered for the role of Ursula. I saw some response thinking this decision was wrong as well. My belief of that was Melissa McCarthy is a two-time Academy Award nominee, a big name and a somewhat proven box office draw and in my opinion, a good actor who could do a great job with that role. I’m assuming because nothing has been confirmed yet, we haven’t seen any more news. I just think the timing is...interesting. I am looking forward to Halle Bailey in this role. I think she’ll be amazing and all this outrage is ridiculous.
But we’re in the Halle Berry thread, so...what is she working on? Anything? Does anyone here watch Lucifer? There’s an actress in the cast that plays Maze that looks so much like Halle. They should cast her as Halle’s sister in something.

Leslie Anne Brandt is the actress that looks like Halle. They would make great sisters.
I was “upset” over the casting when I thought it was Halle bc I genuinely didn’t get it. Not because she’s African American, but because she’s 50 (? Or around there). At that age, she should/would know not to give her voice up for a man.
Halle Bailey is a cutie and can sing and I think this is wonderful. I had heard Zendaya before the announcement and thought she would have made a fine choice as well.
I honestly don’t get the big deal. It’s a cartoon character, of which that is not the original. I think I read somewhere that Ariel is green in the HCA story. Who gives a shit? White people have been taking POC roles and whitewashing since the invention of film. The crazies that are having actual meltdowns need to get their priorities in check.

They should cast her as Halle’s sister in something. She's currently in the latest John Wick entry. She's playing a badass assassin with trained attack dogs as her sidekicks. I have no idea what she's doing after that. I think she'd due for a great HBO series like season 1 of Big Little Lies.

I want Halle to make a great Hollywood comeback. I think that her role in John Wick is setting the stage for that, but I want someone like Tarantino to give her one of those career-rejuvenating roles that several of his actors have gotten in his movies (Travolta in Pulp Fiction, Jamie Foxx in Django Unchained, Pam Grier and Robert Forster in Foxy Brown, Uma Thurman and David Carradine in Kill Bill). Heck, I would love if Tarantino finally revisited the world of Kill Bill; Halle would be perfect as a Deadly Viper out for revenge for Bill's death. Or maybe she could be the sister of Vivica A Fox's character, also out for revenge against Uma for Vivica's death.

That reminded me of Quentin saying that he was only going to make a certain number of films (10 maybe?) and that he definitely wanted to do the story of Vernita Green's daughter all grown up and looking for revenge on Beatrix. Problematic as he is, Kill Bill is one of my favorite movie(s). I could definitely get on board of Halle playing a mentor/mother figure to little Nicky. I still haven't actually seen the latest John Wick, but I heard she definitely held her own in the movie.

I also have my reservations when it comes to Tarantino, and his is one of those cases that truly sparks important conversations about art and about how we navigate the dilemma of supporting art from artists who happen to be deeply problematic.
