Wasn't that performance at the tree lighting ceremony, though? She was supposed to pre-tape her performance the night before. Almost all the performances were done then.

Whoa. She is really winded there. It's like she's out of shape and trying to run a few miles. I don't know that I have ever seen that with a singer who isn't full-out dancing. Does that happen? Is her outfit way too tight or something? That's how she normally sounds. She's had everybody fooled because she doesn't do live tv anymore. Everything is pre-taped and then she gets them to dub her vocals if there's any live singing in the first place. Normally, she just lipsynchs to a new track that's been pre-recorded to sound live. She's been using the same Hero track for years. Mariah's lucky in that how she sounded is overshadowing the fact that she left fans, her crew and the NBC crew in the rain and cold for three hours before NBC said fuck it and canceled her whole performance. And don't buy that bull her people are trying to sell that Mariah herself was somehow on the phone with her exes lawyers hammering away at a custody agreement in a nearby hotel. Mariah had made it to the tree lighting. Fans saw her there. And even if that was true, it is no excuse for how unprofessional that was. I had also heard the story about the phone call with the lawyers. Does this woman not have assistants who would have reminded her that she had a performance coming up and that she'd have to call the lawyers back later? (Seriously, what was so pressing that whatever negotiation with the lawyers could not have been continued at another time?) It sounds like something knocked out much of her upper register. (Something like that happened to me once when I had laryngitis; this soprano was suddenly singing alto.) That's weird. If it's permanent, she can probably adapt her singing for her new voice so she can avoid straining to reach high notes (and failing).

Those dog whistle notes are, or rather were, her money notes. If she can't do them anymore she's just another mediocre singer.
Celine is cuckoo but she does everything she can to take care of her voice and she can still sing well after so many years. Mariah is pretty much washed up, and word about her chronic lack of professionalism.

That's just weird. By the way, I think Mariah's chest voice has a certain richness and depth to it that would make her more than a mediocre singer. I could tell that from the footage that was leaked.

Honestly, I wouldn't be shocked if the story about the phone call with her lawyer is complete BS. This has been Mariah's MO for awhile. She sings live, she sounds awful, and her people go running to People with some excuse that absolves her of all responsibility and attempts to make people feel bad for criticizing her. Mariah's problem isn't the weather, Nick Cannon, or grief. Her problem is her voice isn't what it used to be and she refuses to accept it. She could rearrange her music so she can sing within the range she now has but she won't. That would require a degree of self-awareness or humility which are two qualities Mariah has never had.

I love me some Mariah, but I do think this is true. She won't accept that she is no longer a 25 year old superstar with an amazing voice. She could still be amazing if she would just make some slight accommodations (wardrobe and music).

This. She really does have an iconic voice. She doesn't need those extreme notes. She should focus on where her voice is at now and work with it.
