Deborah Cox is a fantastic singer in her own right. Obviously Whitney in her prime was just "Wow" but to replicate her voice, you can do much worse than DC.
BK and her situation is just sad all around.

Not to be a jerk, but did we really think BK was going to have any sort of career anyway? She looks to be emulating the second-rate Jackson spawn.

No, the poor kid was doomed from the get-go. I think she's obnoxious, but her situation is also very sad.

I was never a huge fan of Whitney's music. She had a magnificent voice, but her material in the beginning wasn't as good as her voice deserved. She never showed much interest in branching out into other genres (gospel, for example). And gah! Her version of "I Will Always Love You" was so overplayed.
And I think ghetto is a state of mind as well as a place. True, Whitney was born in the projects, but her family left when she was four. Just because you start out in the ghetto doesn't mean you have to stay ghetto or act ghetto. There are people who live in the ghetto who wouldn't go anywhere near drugs. There are people in the ghetto who are good parents to their kids. There are people in the ghetto who are good people.
So...I don't think the ghetto is entirely to blame for the Houstons' nasty, drug-addled, hood-rat selves. And Cissy? Your three kids all became crackheads. Your sons have done absolutely nothing with their lives. As Ninja Bunny said, these should be clues that you. fucked. up.
So stay the hell off the talk shows, lady, and quit coasting on your late daughter's name. You don't have a damn thing to be proud of.

Whitney did some gospel for The Preacher's Wife soundtrack. She was certainly capable of doing gospel; she grew up singing in the church. She ventured more into R&B some time after she did The Bodyguard (e.g. the Waiting to Exhale Soundtrack and subsequent albums). I agree that you could not escape her version of "I Will Always Love You" on the radio in its prime.

Random, but my fave WH song is You Give Good Love. I'll take it over I Will Always Love You any day of the week. Deborah Cox does sound good, though.

I've been caught and laughed at a few times for bopping in the car along with "I Wanna Dance With Somebody." I will own it; that song never fails to lighten my mood.

But she's been doing it live since she first came on the scene. Jesus Loves Me and gospel medleyA Quiet Place This DayThere's a shit ton of other live gospel perfermances from Whitney on youtube.

Yes. Whitney also sang "Jesus Loves Me" in The Bodyguard. I recently rewatched The Bodyguard and I still like it all these years later. It's a shame she didn't do many more movies (note the gap in between the Cinderella film with Brandy and her last role in Sparkle); she definitely possessed a natural talent and charisma on screen. (Bobbi Kristina should take note for that's how it's done!) ETA: deeconsistent - I loved Whitney's early stuff as well. I primarily like pop music and I grew up listening to that in the 80s. Not everyone appreciated Whitney's poppy sound. Whitney got booed at the 1989 Soul Train Awards. Oh, if Ebony only realized how ironically prescient those words were at the time...

Yeah, the music she made following "The Bodyguard" soundtrack sounded nothing like what she was doing earlier in her career. "Your Love is My Love" is one of the best R&B albums of the last 20 years, imo. But I knew her and loved her primarily as a pop-soul girl and I loved her early stuff.
