Sadly, I know women who have developed (or have been taught) a "boys will be boys" mentality as it pertains to being abused. I guess that can feel much less scary than accepting the reality that 'this is fucked up, I'm not in control, no one is protecting me,' etc.

I haven’t seen the documentary (and I probably won’t), but I thought get it presented Whitney as hyper vigilant. She evidently always took Bobbi Kristina on tour with her and refused to leave her with family, since Whitney had been shuffled around while Cissy was on tour.
What a sad story.

Apparently Whitney's brother worked as a drug mule in his teens. That's what he told the filmmaker, anyway.
Dee Dee Warwick, by the way, was Whitney's cousin. She was Dionne Warwick's sister.
This is a seriously fucked up family. This goes beyond "ghetto." Whitney was no prize as a mother, but her family was much, much worse.

Dee Dee had issues with drugs as well. That family is indeed a mess.

She evidently always took Bobbi Kristina on tour with her and refused to leave her with family, since Whitney had been shuffled around while Cissy was on tour. What a sad story. Whitney rarely had Bobby K with her while she toured. I know that's what the director assumes and said in an interview, but Whitney fans are like no, not true. And this is in the new doc, also. A close family friend identified in the film as Aunt Bae, details the first time she met Bobbi Kristina as a newborn. Whitney, who’d just welcomed her baby girl with then-husband Bobby Brown, had reportedly checked herself out of the hospital early and brought the baby to Aunt Bae’s doorstep. “She was hunched over” the woman recalls in her interview of Whitney’s state when she handed over her baby. “She said ‘Aunt Bae can you bathe her?'”
According to Aunt Bae, Houston left and didn’t return. Before bursting into tears, the now-elderly family friend says she kept Bobbi Kristina for 2-3 months and that the child would go on to live with her for the first eight years of her life.
Despite Whitney and Bobby’s love for their only child, “They didn’t take care of Krissy,” says one family member when interviewed, “They just left her to the wolves.” people.com/music/whitney-houston-documentary-bobbi-kristina-using-drugs-suicide-attempt/

I liked Whitney Houston--her first album was one of the first albums I ever owned--but I didn't follow her career. I'm kind of glad I didn't, since her death seems inevitable.

Despite Whitney and Bobby’s love for their only child, “They didn’t take care of Krissy,” says one family member when interviewed, “They just left her to the wolves.” I remember in a thread on a board (was it TWOP??) about Being Bobby Brown, there was a running joke about Bobbi Kristina being left home alone, and having to feed herself by nuking Hot Pockets. In retrospect, that joke seemed to ring true.

"She hated her life."
This makes me so sad for Bobbi Kristina.
I've said it before: Whitney may have been born in the projects, but she had advantages and opportunities that other kids from that environment lacked. She had every chance to rise above it. "Ghetto" was a state of mind in this case, not necessarily a place. You can only blame so much on her upbringing. In the end, she was responsible for her own destruction.

And partially responsible for her daughter’s destruction, which is reprehensible.

BK lived in Atlanta. There is a strong black successful community with role models BK could have really learned some valuable life lessons from. She had the resources to live whatever kind of life she wanted.
